The cat is watching me type from the new perch just above and behind the computer’s moniter. It wasn’t where we had intended to put it, mostly as it’s in the dead center of the room, just a few feet in front of the wood stove. But from the moment we sat it there, she has clambered up for short naps or extended slumber, and hasn’t tried to scramble atop the computer itself or sleep curled around my favorite fragile lamp. So I’m thinking she just might get her way. Now she is literally on a pedestal. Figures.
My parents stopped in today, on a mission of food and constructive criticism. I really wish my mother would be nicer to my cat. I know she’s not a grandchild, and thus a disappointment and I mean, sure, she made Texas Hash and chocolate pie so I should just be grateful… but the cat seems genuinely hurt by her lack of affection. Not physically hurt, just surprised and offended. Noone else ever treats her this way. Mom doesn’t like cats–I get that–but what she does is just bizarre.
Allcats is friendly, and will eventually greet most quiet strangers. She’ll rub against mom, who will pet her for just a moment before reaching out and tugging mischeviously on her fine poufy tail. Kitty always stops short when this happens and whips her tail back around herself and away from mom’s grubby paws, and just gives her this look. This totally offended, completely siamese glare that clearly says to mom, “What the FUCK?!” She puffs up a bit and sets herself in a corner, watching my parents with a mixture of haughty disrespect and concern. She cleans her tail frantically.
The worst part about it is that my cat has gradually learned to be wary of both my parents. This is sort of sad for my dad, who actively does want to love on her a bit. So he pats at the couch and tsk-tsks to call her, but she stays put under the coffee table, watching them balefully.
When they are gone, I will lure her out with a wet food treat and a new toy, and try and convince her that, really, if she wants to, next time mom pulls her tail she should feel free to swipe at her with drawn claws. It would be justified.
