Mag, meme, mrarrrr.

Red Hat Magazine #16 is out. It’s got the second half of my article on Cory Doctorow. It’s also got the transcript to the full interview, which weighed in at something like 59 pages when it was all typed up. Thank gods for transcription services.

Also, damn her hide, this list of stuff:

  1. my name: at the bottom of every post
  2. my childhood ambition: fire truck; a member of a G.I. Joe-style military unit; doctor or vet
  3. my fondest memory: lots of good ones, so many I could never pick just one. I think life is a collection of interesting snapshots–tragic ones, too, but the fond ones are just the best. Fireworks over the castle. The bright aqua Caribbean sea behind newlywed friends. Sitting in the living room at the lake house, all of us, quietly knitting or reading or watching tv or playing a game, just being there, together. Seeing the Cure. Watching the rain on hot pavement behing Northhampton Terrace. Having beer poured on my head by a dear friend. Ice in the bamboo at Dixie. An ex-bf pyre on the steps of Manning Hall.
  4. my soundtrack: same as it’s always been: every Cure album, end-to-end, chronological order.
  5. my retreat: my bedroom, where everything is purple. the lake house, where we all go for retreat and refreshment. my car, where i can sing out loud if i want to.
  6. my wildest dream: Right now, my dreams are decidedly un-wild things like financial stability and home ownership.
  7. my proudest moment: when I figure out how to do something very difficult. Like taking something apart and being able to ‘get’ how it works, or dicephering a piece of code that’s way above my head, or making up a knitting pattern based off of things I’ve seen and having it come out right. Also, this painting I did of a water polo player in 5th grade.
  8. my biggest challenge: Being on time for anything. Watching my mouth/temper.
  9. my alarm clock: As anyone who’s lived under the same roof with me can (and does, usually grumpily) attest: what wakes me up is a series of alarms that get switched out every once in a while when I learn to sleep through the sounds, or to make them go away while not really having to wake all the way up. Right now it’s a really loud and obnoxious ring from my cel phone (which is across the room, forcing me to actually get out of the bed), followed by the semi-infamous truck-backing-up alarm clock, which has two separate alarms and a volume max that wakes up everything in the house… except, on occasion, for me.
  10. my perfect day: I wake up and it is snowing outside–a blizzard. The power stays on, though, so there’s video games and movies and the interwebs by the toasty fire in the fireplace. When it’s light enough outside, I’d bundle up and go for a short walk–just to the mailbox or down the street a bit, maybe take the camera. Watch the snow fall. Enjoy the sounds you only hear when it is snowing, Frost’s ‘easy wind and downy flake.’ Once I’m cold, come inside and make breakfast. A fritatta or cinnamon rolls. Have some coffee. Spend the afternoon alternately watching the snow and putzing around the house. Perhaps play a game or work or blog. Watch a Lifetime movie. Start some kind of soup or stew, either on the stove or in the crockpot. Go back outside, to play. This trip will require good gloves and boots. Build a snowman or a fort or simply sculpt some sort of impressionistic but still mildly pornographic snow art. Find friends or neighbors and start a snowball fight. Shovel the walk. Once exhausted, return inside for a warm shower, clean jammies, and fuzzy slippers. Have dinner, then retire by the fire for some knitting. Perhaps watch a movie. Before bed, go stand outside and watch the snow continue to fall while smoking a clove cigarette. Then get into bed with clean fresh sheets, the cat curled up next to me, and go to sleep, knowing that everything for tomorrow is cancelled and the world outside is perfectly still.
  11. my first job: Babysitting and working the concession stand at the swim club we belonged to.
  12. my indulgence: just like my mom: french fries. also expensive yarn and other crafting supplies. and, the Big One: holiday decor. It would likely be embarrassing to calculate how much I’ve and other folks have spent on the Halloween stuff I own. One of the key things I want in a new home is a place to store all this crap… and more.
  13. My last purchase: I bought shampoo and conditioner, liquid soap, a headband, and q-tips at the drugstore on the way home.
  14. My inspiration: Good writing, smart people, and brilliant art.
