This post is special.

And why is it so special, you ask?

Because I’m making it from my back porch.

Stopped by Best Buy to pick up a wireless mouse for fat-bob, and saw the add-on wireless access point for under $80. With a wired network in place, I didn’t want to re-buy everything, but had more than a couple places wire just wouldn’t reach. Like the living room for gaming.

Not anymore, baby.

Did run into some issues trying to put my bedroom TiVo back on the network. (Had high hopes for that–hopes that involve watching recorded Passions in the lab.) A little poking around on the web told me that Series 2 machines are funny about what kind of USB device they’ll take, and the wireless-G won’t do. It’s ok to have a G access point, but the bit that plugs into the TiVo has to be B. I have no idea what that means, but there’s a short list that are certified by TiVo, so I suppose I’ll start there. Or order the TiVo-made version from their website. But will that like my network devices?

But, hey, it’s halfway there. Hooray for back-porch blogging! And a big part of the happy is knowing I did it all on my own.

    cool!

I’m fairly certain the USB devices were once displayed next to the TiVos. But, that’s just my wild stab in the dark with hazy memory; I’ve never setup an access point.

Go SuperGeek! Once you have the correct USB thumbdrive thingie, the Tivo is crazy easy to setup on a wireless network. Creepily, it figures it out itself. We did have an IP conflict, briefly, but restarting the Tivo fixed that.

Apparently, the version of the USB devices that worked with TiVo is an older version, and LinkSys only makes one (the WUSB12).

When I stopped by Best Buy again on Saturday, I found the stock ticket for them on the shelf, but that shelf was bare. :( The man in the blue shirt said that they’d sold out and were having trouble getitng more. They’re a back-generation of the devices, and are being phased-out in favor of the a/g flavor. He advised hitting the web.

I found one, ‘refurbished,’ from a trusted seller, but that was the best I could do. I ordered it anyway, lest I remain TiVo-limited forever.

I also hear (from the man in the blue shirt) that the new Series 3 are coming out and their subscription model will be changing. Guess they have to stay in business somehow.

And, yeah, everything I’ve read says that when you get the correct USB adapter, it works like a charm. :) Now I’m just impatient for it to arrive!

Dude, once you get that, it will be like a dream come true. I had the same problem, and ended up having to eBay my adapter (I also got a spare, and have it tucked away for the day the first one dies). The TiVo is quite good at figuring itself out once the right adapter’s on it.
