A tale of two piggies

Next on Southern chef: Memorial Day Rib Battle. Chef C. vs. Chef my Dad.
What better time than Memorial Day weekend to light the grill and prepare some holiday food? For the beginning of summertime, the classic dish is, of course, ribs. Here in the south, that generally means ribs of the pig (Sorry, there, B., […]

A hedgehog and a fox walk into a bar…

Monday, May 29th, 2006

Went over to Robust and R.’s place for a typical Saturday evening of good food, good friends, and a little geeky action. We got our grill on: C. made ribs and they were fucking amazing. Then we got our game on–the previously mentioned Vampire game where we are all mortals (i.e., food). We ended a […]

Gigantic family day, revisited

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

Weirdly enough, amongst all the spam and junk that gets tossed into the comments bin, I do manage to occasionally pick out real people, saying what appear to be real things, about something I’ve written. Sure enough, 99% of the time, they’re people I know. Which is, of course, awesome, but I generally have an […]

Vampires and cupcakes

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

By way of announcement: I’ve installed a spam-fighter. So if you post a comment and it never shows up that could be why. You could let me know, I suppose. If that’s your sort of thing.
My sort of thing is RPGs cuz, enh, dork, etc.. We’ve sort of started a new Vampire game, and I […]

Shrimp and grits

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

A Southern staple which I have never actually made before. Well, ok, never actually made together. But separately? Cheese grits for breakfast, check. Shrimp scampi, check. Fryin’ some bacon? Duh, CHECK.
So, pretty much, that’s all there is to it. It was damn delicious.

1/2 c grits, quick cooking but not instant
1 c milk
1 c […]

New Orleans follow-up: Goldie’s safe!

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

A while ago, I posted about the trip I took to New Orleans. It was about this time last year that we were there. I also wrote an article for Red Hat Magazine.
One of the people that I wrote about was Goldie, a street performer that we met one night on Bourbon Street. We hung […]

Rainy sunday.

Sunday, May 14th, 2006

Stayed up waaaay late last night playing Vampire at Robust’s place. Went to bed sometime just before dawn. Got up around noon and spent the day alternately working, knitting, and putzing around the house, which seems to be my of-late M.O. Towards the end of the afternoon, we got a series of strong storms […]

Seafood omelet

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

Ok, so this is definitely not the healthiest thing I’ve ever made. But it’s based on an omelet that this restaurant in Emerald Isle (NC) used to serve. Only theirs had like 6 eggs and some insane amounts of cheese. My lord.
6 to 8 leftover broiled shrimp, scallops, chopped
or a few T of […]

Who needs CAD certification when you’ve played the Sims?

Sunday, May 7th, 2006

Ok, so I found this software online. I was looking for something a little more robust than, say, the Sims 2, for floorplan planning. (The Sims 2 has the unfortunate downsides of (1) not having all the basic objects, (2) issues of scale and (3) you keep playing instead of building. Especially if you […]
