Halloween, part 1
I’m not dead. Really. Some mornings when I wake up right now, I sort of wish I was, but that’s mostly because I wouldn’t have to get out of my nice, warm bed. The nice warm part being the exact opposite of the rest of the house, which is without heat and a bit chilly. The heat did not come on when the switch was flipped and, thus, it is likely I will write some hopefully nice gentleman a very big check and he will do something about it.
Aside from THAT, however, things are going along about as close to plan as usual. Dorien, seen here, is growing into a handsome boy. He’s made fast friends with his aunties and uncles, but is still a momma’s boy.
Halloween has begun in earnest. The boxes are unpacked, the lights are starting to go out, and there’s a ton of shit being built. I’m starting to hear from friends and family about the delicious things they’ll bring along, and everyone seems excited.
The cauldron on the left is from my experiment with dry ice. A mix-up resulted in a great big cooler with several bags of dry ice being delivered to my house. I’ve always wanted to have some for Halloween, but it’s expensive. Not to mention the mayhem that could occur with both a steady supply of fire AND ice. I mean, we’ve already seen where fire can lead.
However, it might be useful on Halloween night. Just a few pieces?
All this decorating exhausts the cats. Here’s Door in one of his famous porn star poses. Oh yeah. I don’t know why, but he likes to sprawl out just about anywhere–even if it’s a place that won’t support all his bits. You’ll often see him with his head or haunches hanging off a chair, the cat seat, the bed. Funny little man.
When I’m not taking risque pictures of the cats, I’m in the workshop–otherwise known as the garage. The car got relocated to the top of the driveway for the next few weeks, and the floor’s covered in cut PVC and pieces of wood and foam. Also bags of lights and boxes of props and tools. It’s pretty insane.
When it was 40-some degrees in the house, and the kids were trying to actually shove themselves inside my body to get warm, t-shirts seemed appropriate. And also, cute. I’m not sure what the excuse was for letting them run around in them all day today, though.
He still has very little meow and plenty of purr. He climbs my legs to my lap when I’m sitting at my desk and he wants attention. Sometimes he’ll just wrap himself around my feet and fall asleep. He enjoys playing soccer in the hallway and eating lint off the floor. If proper attention isn’t paid to these activities, he’ll flop on the keyboard and ignore the OS’s frantic beeping.
And what is this? Wouldn’t you just like to know? It’s one of the many surprises in store this year…
I have to say: This year’s theme? Pretty pleasing. I have a feeling we might have to do Tim Burton again someday, when I have more time. And money.
I know you totally wanted to see more of my shameless kitten, so here he is. Both the cats migrate from sun patch to sun patch during the day, and one of their favorite spots to snooze is the guest bed. Here you see how Dorien can stretch to take up almost the entire thing, even though he only weighs seven pounds.
I went to get the camera to take this shot because both cats were up there, but AllCats would not deign to be photographed in such a compromising position, so she stalked off before I got the chance.
And, in closing (now that I’ve bored you with kitten pron and tawdry Halloween tales), here’s a first taste of the Hallows light show. My favorite tree, lit up my favorite color. More to come, I hope.
As always, anybody who’s bored and wants to come use power tools, paint stuff, come up with novel solutions, drink way too much caffeine, and totally watch me freak out… give me a call. There’s always use for additional sets of hands and MacGyver brains. (Also for coordinated tall people willing to climb ladders.) Lots still to do…

[…] Check out Bascha’s first Halloween post. I can verify that the bits about the garage being absolutely impressive. It clearly ranks among the most impressive I’ve seen, both in layout and contents. Which is good, because the goings-on proceed at full speed. Think of those shows on cable tv where a bunch of people build cars and bikes and similar stuff in a garage. Those shows on similar educational channels about Halloween props and building haunted houses, too. OK, that’s the starting point. I’m taking side bets on when a plasma cutter and robotics with embedded processors are introduced. You should see the faces at the hardware stores just in this year. […]
