Shrimp and grits

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

A Southern staple which I have never actually made before. Well, ok, never actually made together. But separately? Cheese grits for breakfast, check. Shrimp scampi, check. Fryin’ some bacon? Duh, CHECK.
So, pretty much, that’s all there is to it. It was damn delicious.

1/2 c grits, quick cooking but not instant
1 c milk
1 c […]

Rainy sunday.

Sunday, May 14th, 2006

Stayed up waaaay late last night playing Vampire at Robust’s place. Went to bed sometime just before dawn. Got up around noon and spent the day alternately working, knitting, and putzing around the house, which seems to be my of-late M.O. Towards the end of the afternoon, we got a series of strong storms […]

Seafood omelet

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

Ok, so this is definitely not the healthiest thing I’ve ever made. But it’s based on an omelet that this restaurant in Emerald Isle (NC) used to serve. Only theirs had like 6 eggs and some insane amounts of cheese. My lord.
6 to 8 leftover broiled shrimp, scallops, chopped
or a few T of […]

Things I have learned recently.

Saturday, May 6th, 2006

The true cost of a house: A roof is between 5 and 10K, depending on whether you have it re-shingled or stripped down and totally rebuilt. HVAC bits? 5K and up. Water heaters are cheap, weighing in around $700 or so. Washer/Dryer? Starting around $250 apiece, with the really nice front-load magic ones topping 1K. […]

Try, try again.

So, what’s for dinner after a hard day of househunting? Apparently with one challenge behind me, I felt another one was in the offing. I had stuck a chicken breast in the fridge to thaw a day or so ago.
Now, for most people ‘a chicken breast’ doesn’t spawn Marsellus Wallace-level fright. Me? Oi, vey. I […]

What to do with truffle cheese

Monday, March 6th, 2006

This is mostly for M and R, with whom we left the other piece of the cheese that some crazy person from California sent us that was so deliciously powerful we couldn’t possibly eat it all before it went bad, though we REALLY wanted to. Not being able to bear the thought of letting it […]

Turkey dinner

Monday, January 30th, 2006

For some reason, I’m disturbed by the fact that I don’t know how to properly prepare large pieces of meat, so this weekend I tried roasting a turkey breast. It was pretty easy, and quite delicious.
Here’s how it went. It took most of a day because I did it in the crockpot, but in […]

Roasted and glazed sweet potatoes

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

Apparently, my craving for sick-girl comfort food extends to the point where I will make it my damn self if that’s the option available. A run out to the closest store (an expensive European-style market with a fantastic butcher) to net gingerale and milk also resulted in a bright bunch of fresh spinach, slices […]

Christmas, part 1

Monday, November 28th, 2005

The Halloween stuff has been relegated to the spare room and attic-space, and everything for Christmas is scattered around the house, half in and half out of boxes. The garland is on the mantel, though no stockings are yet hung by the chimney with care. Two tiny trees are out, but Thanksgiving travel foiled our […]

friday flames and fives

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

Nothing much to report here — until I bother to unload the scads of recent pictures, that is. Tomorrow is Cary’s Lazy Daze, which is basically an excuse for K and I to go rummage around at a Craft Fair for hours and hours and have fair food for lunch. Mmmmmm. Starts […]
