Photos from Zimbabwe Greenstone workshop
Amos Kujenga, one of our most active participants in eIFL-FOSS, just posted some great photos of the Greenstone workshop held in December in Zimbabwe.
This workshop was held in Bulawayo from 3-5 December 2007. It was hosted on behalf of ZULC by the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) as part of the (eIFL.net) Southern Africa Greenstone Support Pilot Project
When I speak about eIFL-FOSS in North America, people often express surprise that libraries in Africa want digital repositories, since these seem like luxury items and many of us at libraries with better funding and technology infrastructure can’t yet figure out workable models. But libraries around the world want to provide access to their own local materials; they do not want to have to rely on selection and interpretation from North America and Western Europe. Additionally, computers are starting to become affordable enough that digital book collections are becoming more and more of an appealing option for libraries with limited funding. It sounds like these workshops have been a great success, and from the mailing list it looks like an active community is forming to provide mutual support.

Maybe the secret is that these folks actually care about repositories? Value them? Are committed to them?
Just an idea.
