Ode to Leela

Futurama was a damn fine show, and I’m appreciating it anew over the holidays. As I spend hour after hour in front of the telly with my laptop, watching Futurama re-runs, I want to take a moment to recognize the beauty of Turanga Leela. I read a lot of novels, and I watch a lot of movies and television (or at least I used to, before I started taking on insane amounts of work, but I digress) and the character of Leela speaks to me in a way that is unique. She’s a freak, by any measure, but she puts a brave face on it and goes out into the world anyway, even refusing to let a plastic surgeon boyfriend “fix” her. She makes mistakes in love, but ultimately stays true to herself, and (god bless you, Matt Groening) doesn’t end up with Fry just out of pity, but recognizes that although it’s sad, he really is wrong for her. Most importantly, she’s the pilot of a ship, she takes her job seriously and demonstrates leadership and moral guidance to the rest of the crew. Before you ask, yes, I also wish I wasn’t turning to characters from cancelled science fiction cartoons for role models, but there it is.
