Anti-alcoholism comic book ad

Anti-alcoholism comic book ad

Alcoholism is a terrible problem in the Canadian North, especially in Inuit communities. Hardly a surprise… mix genocide, high unemployment, cultural devestation, and generations of church sponsored sex abuse with months of unending darkness and killing cold, and it isn’t too surprising that some folks turn to drink. I want to be clear that I am not trying to make light of this very serious social problem.
But look at this ad! Apparently, not only is recovering from alcoholism “easy,” it also turns you into He-Man. Also, it apparently changes the climate. Joseph Corto here is supposed to be from Yellowknife.
This is a picture of him and his lovely wife in bathing suits at a Yellowknife Beach. I haven’t spent a lot of time in Yellowknife, but I have been there a few times, in summer, and I’m pretty sure no one wears bikinis to the beach. This is a place where the water is ice so much of the year that people build houses on it.
I’m not sure who they were trying to convince with this ad.

Nope, I wouldn’t wear a bikini either.

McNiven Beach used to be our main beach back in the day, but as Peter Binkley mentioned it is infested with blood suckers and a host of other parasites and noone should ever swim there. However, our other beach is in Fred Henne Territorial Park beach (on Long Lake) and girls do wear bikinis quite often. Our average temperatures in June and July are above 20 degrees celsius and since we are very arid there is hardly any rain and the sun is out all day and most of the night.
