Moments in ineffectual advertising
I read comics and graphic novels a lot, and Tom the Dancing Bug is one of my favorite regular reads. It’s published online by Go Comics, and generally I think they have a pretty good business model and I appreciate the service they provide. I just noticed this ad, though… I guess they will deliver your favorite comics to your cell phone? Cool idea, but why pick Garfield to advertise this service? Garfield is right up there with Family Circus as one of the most inane humor-free comic strips in existence, and nothing ever happens. The only people I can think of who like Garfield are little kids of a certain age, who presumably don’t have cell phones or credit cards. So who are they marketing to here? All those people who just can’t wait to find out whether Garfield will still like lasagna today? Or could Garfield actually have a significant following among adult readers? The thought makes me shudder.
