Re: Android support for polytonic Greek

I'm using the ubuntu fonts that were suggested in another thread. When I first tried it it didn't work. On a whim I tried it again and it did... Not sure why. I am using Gingerbread (2.3.6). I'm concerned that you can't get this to work on a Note 2. I almost got one of those. I'm seriously consideri...

Re: Pronunciation of Consecutive Identical Vowel Sounds

Would you expect the glottal stop phenomenon to occur within a single word? For example ἵει-- 3rd person singular imperfect active ἵημι. Would that be "hee-ee" or "heeee" or just "hee"?

Re: Answer Key to Machen

May I ask why you need it? If you are in a class, your professor should be able to correct your answers. If you are not in a class, there are better ways and textbooks to pursue your studies. I know this isn't exactly on topic for the post but I second this statement. I worked through Machen in sel...

Re: What Secular Greek texts do you give NT Greek students?

Some time ago Mark Lightman proposed the GRONT index. This is "Greek Readings Outside the New Testament". Works can be given a GRONT score (very subjective). For fun I created a page that shows GRONT scores for different works and allows users to provide scores and add new works. This may ...

Re: Joseph Dasenbrock

I strongly recommend "From Alpha to Omega, An Introduction to Classical Greek, Rev Third Edition", Groton. This is an excellent book. The grammar elements are explained fully and clearly, the pacing is good, the exercises are instructive. The only thing I could complain about is that it co...

There are still undergrad degrees majoring in Ancient Greek? I'm pleasantly surprised. I thought they had all gone the way of the dodo bird.

Reading English classics helps Greek learning

My hypothesis is that reading English (or native-language) classic literature helps with learning classical Greek. When I was in high-school and college I avoided reading the "classics" as much as possible because they were boring. Instead I read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy. But in the las...

Re: First 1000 Words in Koine Greek

I like the idea of a photo with a bunch of the stuff labeled. Or maybe even one of those "find the items in this picture" type photos where we have to find the stuff but stuff to find is listed in Greek. Somehow I think that constantly saying hIPPOS in my head while looking for a horse mig...
