When to Treat Participles as Finite Verbs, e.g., Luke 10:18
I am looking at Luke 10:18 as part of a larger project but am pondering how to translate the participle at the end: εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς· ἐθεώρουν τὸν σατανᾶν ὡς ἀστραπὴν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ πεσόντα. (Lk. 10:18 BNT) It could be that πεσόντα is adjectival: the falling Satan, if it is controlled by τὸν. However...

Re: Mark of a Substantive Participle (Heb 1:2-3)
Thanks everyone. I was not aware that there are anarthrous substantival participles. I was fairly confident that the participles in Hebe 1:3-4 are adverbial.

Mark of a Substantive Participle (Heb 1:2-3)
I am not asking anything profound. I only want to verify what I think is correct. The only way to form a substantive participle is with a a direct object, correct? You cannot do it with a noun, or a relative pronoun, or other thing, right? I am asking because I have students who want to read the thr...

Hebrews 1:1 Adjectival or adverbial participle?
In Heb 1:1, I am looking at the participle λαλήσας . Πολυμερῶς καὶ πολυτρόπως πάλαι ὁ θεὸς λαλήσας τοῖς πατράσιν ἐν τοῖς προφήταις. On the one hand, it appears to be in an attributive position, and thus is an adjectival participle, "God who has spoken to the fathers by the prophets." An ad...

Re: Opening words of 2 Peter 1:5
I am glad to know that this is recognized by others as a hard passage! Thanks for the input. I was not trying to go from English back to Greek, except in the sense of trying to figure out how fairly literal translations made their choices. Obviously, trying to go from English to Greek is what is wro...

List of single-instance words in the NT by book?
I'm looking for a convenient list of the words that only occur one time in the GNT by book. Does anyone know of such a resource? Thanks.

Punctuation at the end of 2 Peter 1:2
Both NA27 and UBS 4 have this for 2 Peter 1:2-3a: χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη πληθυνθείη ἐν ἐπιγνώσει τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν. 3 Ὡς πάντα ἡμῖν τῆς θείας δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ There is a period at the end of v. 2. We of course cannot say what punctuation Peter originally had in mind, since there wasn't...

Opening words of 2 Peter 1:5
2 Peter 1:5a reads Καὶ αὐτὸ τοῦτο δὲ σπουδὴν πᾶσαν παρεισενέγκαντες ἐπιχορηγήσατε ἐν τῇ πίστει ὑμῶν τὴν ἀρετήν, I have looked at a few English translations to see how they deal with the first four words, but that was not illuminating. BDAG says that the Καὶ αὐτὸ combination should be rendered "...

Teaching beginning Textual Criticism at the Seminary level
I need to develop a tutorial/presentation for M.Div. students on actually performing textual criticism--not just what TC involves but actually doing it, and preferably in Luke's Gospel. I am working on this but I'd be interested in any materials others have/use for similar purposes. I cannot assume ...

Critical Apparatus UBS3 vs. UBS4
My understanding is that the UBS4 critical apparatus is cut down from the UBS3. How much information is lost from 3 to 4? How important for textual criticism is the loss from 3 to 4? I am trying to decide if our library should keep the UBS3 for the extra apparatus information. Thanks. Ken Litwak Ref...
