Re: John 11:23 Ἀναστήσεται

Thanks Carl!

I totally forgot that ἀνα- can mean "again." Now it makes sense to me.

John 11:23 Ἀναστήσεται

John 11:23 λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Ἀναστήσεται ὁ ἀδελφός σου. This is probably a silly question and there’s probably not a good answer for it. But I will throw it out anyway. It seems like the majority of English translations render the word Ἀναστήσεται as “rise again” in John 11:23 even though the wor...

Re: Conjugation of "forgive" in 1Jn 1:9

It seems like whenever I see "ἵνα" in scripture the verb following it is usually subjunctive. For that reason aorist subjunctive seems reasonable to me.

John 8:33 Antecedant of "they"

Commentaries seem to be split as to who ἀπεκρίθησαν refers to in verse 33....

Re: Question regarding κατ’ ἰδίαν

Some sort of feminine noun is implied by the idiom. Whether it's χώρα, ψυχή, or some other noun, I haven't been able to tell (neither full phrase generates any hits on TLG), but since it's an idiom that doesn't really matter anymore. Thanks. I find things like this interesting. If there is no reaso...

Re: Question regarding κατ’ ἰδίαν

κατ ιδιαν [χωραν] ( idiom ) = privately In other words, it's in the feminine form because that's the idiom ... I know that in English there are reasons for certain idioms and others ... well not so much. A friend of mine has an interesting theory as to why it is feminine. It makes sense to me, but ...

Question regarding κατ’ ἰδίαν

It appears that when ἴδιος follows κατά in the N.T. (such as κατ’ ἰδίαν) it is usually in the feminine form. I was wondering why that might be.

John 20:21 -- ἀποστέλλω vs πέμπω

Hi, Is there a significant reason why John uses two different words for send in John 20:21? John 20:21b says " ... καθὼς ἀπέσταλκέν με ὁ πατήρ, κἀγὼ πέμπω ὑμᾶς." Some Greek scholars say that they are used interchangeably in this verse. At least one person believes that there is a ‘signific...

Re: Ephesians 2.8

Concerning Eph 2:8, Dan Wallace wrote: This is the most debated text in terms of the antecedent of the demonstrative pronoun, τοῦτο. The standard interpretations include: (1) “grace” as antecedent, (2) “faith” as antecedent, (3) the concept of a grace-by-faith salvation as antecedent, and (4) καὶ το...
