Re: Luke 6:12 - odd genitive

I agree that there isn't an actual grammatical error involved. I'm also convinced that it is, in fact, an objective genitive. I'm asking if it sounds odd to you. I admit my search was cursory rather than scholarly, but I did not find a single other objective genitive after προσευχη in the LXX + NT. ...

Luke 6:12 - odd genitive

Luke 6:12b - καὶ ἦν διανυκτερεύων ἐν τῇ προσευχῇ τοῦ θεοῦ. I was casually reading this chapter, and this genitive stuck out to me. It seemed so odd that Luke would render the recipient of the prayer in the genitive. I would have expected τῳ θεῳ or προς τον θεον. I checked the LXX and NT, and though ...

Help with odd rendering in LXX (Prov. 3:12)

Are there resources out there explaining how we might have gotten from the Hebrew text to an LXX rendering? I'm working through Prov. 3:12 right now. LXX: υἱέ μὴ ὀλιγώρει παιδείας κυρίου μηδὲ ἐκλύου ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ ἐλεγχόμενος 12 ὃν γὰρ ἀγαπᾷ κύριος παιδεύει μαστιγοῖ δὲ πάντα υἱὸν ὃν παραδέχεται Hebrew: כ...

Word order in Koine composition

I'm looking for a resource that will help me compose Koine Greek with acceptable word order. I have skimmed several resources on word order in Herodotus and in the Tragedians, but I am not sure that they are of great use to me in this endeavor. I realize that there is no one way to write a sentence ...

Re: Westminster Μικροτέρα Κατήχησις

So, what you're saying, Carl, is that I need a LOT more practice. Thanks for the catch.

Re: Westminster Μικροτέρα Κατήχησις

I've made a number of changes, including replacing ειναι with ουσια. 1.

For composition practice, I'm rendering questions form the Westminster Shorter Catechism into idiomatic Koine. Advice and corrections welcome. The English is available here So far, I'm not sure how to handle the odd singular-plural in question #2. "Of the old and new covenants" in English ...

Pronunciation of γαμμα (Buth-Koine)

I've been pronouncing γαμμα as a "g" uniformly, but recently I've come across the notion that in the Koine period, it at certain times carried an English consonantal "y" sound. According to the reconstructed Koine system, when do I pronounce as "g" and when as "y&q...

Re: Difficult sentence in Chrysostom

From Burton's Moods and Tenses 396. The Infinitive with τῷ. The Infinitive with the article τῷ is used in classical Greek to express cause, manner, means. In the New Testament it is used to express cause. Its only other use is after the preposition ἐν. HA. 959; G. 1547. 2 Cor 2:13; τῷ μὴ εὑρεῖν με Τ...

Tense/Mood in Gal. 4:15

Galatians 4:15 ποῦ οὖν ὁ μακαρισμὸς ὑμῶν; μαρτυρῶ γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι εἰ δυνατὸν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν ἐξορύξαντες ἐδώκατέ μοι. Paul here is describing the past desire or hypothetical desire of the Galatians that was, of course, not realized. I was surprised to come across the aorist indicative here. I'm use...
