Re: BLC Living Koine Greek - word count?

I am tempted to attempt a very basic CI based audio course based on the work that you (Randall Buth) have done. Just a head's up: It takes a lot of work to get the Greek idiomatic and correct. There are people trying to do this, some are reliable, others not. But it takes quite a bit of background ...

Re: ὁ καὶ ...

A little more digging and I did find this helpful summary: Καί is a polyfunctional word in Ancient Greek that can function both as a copulative conjunction and as an additive adverb. On the one hand,it is one of the most important copulative conjunctions in Ancient Greek (see, for instance, Bonifazi...

Re: ὁ καὶ ...

It is, for the lack of a better term, "adverbial". In lexicons, this is one of the usages that gets glossed 'also' rather than 'and.' Thanks Mike, that is how it naturally read to me, but I just needed some confirmation that I wasn't getting it wrong here. Much appreciated. (I couldn't find this me...

ὁ καὶ ...

This is the first time I have come across και occurring in this position.

Code: Select all

ὁ καὶ δηλώσας ἡμῖν τὴν ὑμῶν ἀγάπην ἐν πνεύματι. (Colossians 1:8)
The sentence seems perfectly readable, however I am curious about the grammar. Is καὶ still simply acting as a coordinating conjunction?

Re: Seat of Moses (Singular and Plural in Koine Greek)

Psalm 1:1 - μακαριος ανηρ ος ουκ επορευθη εν βουλη ασεβων και εν οδω αμαρτωλων ουκ εστη και επι καθεδραν λοιμων ουκ εκαθισεν Is there but one seat for all the scorners? What a pertinent observation, thanks! I can't help but wonder if this passage is somewhat more clearly metaphorical. (I accept tha...

I would rather ask: is there any language which doesn't have such flexibility?
I am attempting to avoid the problem of assuming Greek operates like English. The wider question "Can all languages do this" is an interesting one though. Good point!

Seat of Moses (Singular and Plural in Koine Greek)

Ἐπὶ τῆς Μωϋσέως καθέδρας ἐκάθισαν οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι The article (excerpt below) asserts that the phrase "Seat of Moses" (cf Matthew 23:2) is singular, and hence it is difficult to suggest that the phrase could have referred literally to seats (plural) that would have been found in Syna...

Re: Collation format

I had thought about that too early on. But the slot ID is tied to is relative position as well for comparison purposes. For example, you could have the same word appearing 5 times in the same verse and you have to know which position each is in. Some texts may only have the word 3 or 4 times, so it...

Re: Collation format

I am quite sure I am missing something here because my first question is, "why not allow greek letters to be used for Slot ID's and allow a variable length slot id?" (If the concern were about storage space, we wouldn't use base 58, but something more compact.) i.e. The Slot ID for ονειδισωσιν ονιδι...
