Re: What version did Jesus use?

Several items here are not correct. First, evraisti means Hebrew, syristi means Aramaic. Evraistii never meant Aramaic. See the article in the Brill volume. It is surprising, maybe shocking, to see the mistaken conclusions that are passed off as data. It is good to cite primary sources not secondary...

Re: What version did Jesus use?

Yesterday there was an interesting post on Zondervan blog: http://zondervanacademic.com/blog/what-language-did-jesus-speak/ (it doesn't open for me right now). Buth et al. wasn't mentioned, references seemed to be a bit older. Thank you for the reference. For what it's worth, I responded to it as f...

Re: What version did Jesus use?

Your question appears to present an incomplete paradigm. If you are reading more and more in this area, you probably need to track down and study: R. Buth and R.S. Notley, editors, The Language Environment of First Century Judaea Brill, 2014. The book is expensive, so an interlibrary loan would be ...

Re: What version did Jesus use?

. . . including the assumption that Jewish residents of Galilee were very likely expected to know at least some Greek. Nazareth being a suburb of what is now seen as a very Greek Sepphoris, it seems likely that that would include Jesus as well. . . . In the USA we tend to be monolingual. It's proba...

Re: What version did Jesus use?

Thank you very much for the responses, which are great. Maybe my question is one of history more than translation, however. I'm reading more and more that Greek culture was far more well established in Galilee than previously believed, including the assumption that Jewish residents of Galilee were v...

What version did Jesus use?

Hello, I'm a newbie with a simple question I'm hoping someone can help me with; In Luke 4:16-17, Jesus reads from Isaiah in a synagogue. Is it safe to assume he's reading from the Septuagint? Or is he reading from Hebrew? Or an Aramaic version? I'm asking because I haven't been able to find an answe...

Re: Preverbal anarthrous predicate nouns; are they qualitati

I'm beginning to go back (before I was so rudely interrupted by Harner, Wallace and Hartley) to the idea that indefinite and qualitative are circular ideas and subjective. If something is indefinite and a member of a class then it likely has the characteristics of the members of that class. And con...
