A New Graded Greek Reader for Croy's Grammar
Hi everyone, I wanted to share a new graded Greek reader I wrote for Eerdmans to accompany Clayton Croy's Primer of Biblical Greek. Here's the publisher's page: https://www.eerdmans.com/Products/7991/a-greek-reader.aspx The book contains original narratives that (mostly) follow a continuous story of...

Re: pronunciation difference between η and ει
η never had the sound of "ey" as in "they." It would be more correct to say it once had the sound of the "e" in "they." It's not a diphthong, whereas ey is. A lot of people, both those who use the Buthian pronunciation and Erasmian, pronounce it like "ey,...

Re: What replaced the optative in Koine?
Bare subjunctive maybe. In Oxyrhynchus Papyri IV 744, a letter from a workman in Alexandria to his wife, circa 1 BC: εἴρηκας... ὅτι μή με ἐπιλάθης. πῶς δύναμαί σε ἐπιλαθεῖν; ἐρωτῶ σε οὖν ἵνα μὴ ἀγωνιάσης. Note: fill in the iota subscripts. I copied it as it is. Hmmm.. those subjunctives are all in ...

Re: What replaced the optative in Koine?
Thanks for your responses. Based on what you've said and what I found in Robertson, what do you think about these Koine alternatives? τοὺς ἵππους ἂν δοίη = τοὺς ἵππους τάχα δίδωσι / δεῖ αὐτὸν τοὺς ἵππους δοῦναι / ὀφείλει τοὺς ἵππους δοῦναι. τοὺς ἵππους λαβοίμεθα = ὄφελον τοὺς ἵππους ἐλαμβάνομεν (Ro...

What replaced the optative in Koine?
I've often heard that the optative gradually disappeared from spoken Koine and was replaced by the subjunctive, but none of the grammars actually list the functions of the optative under the subjunctive, since there don't seem to be any examples. For example, what takes the role of the potential opt...

Audio of Philippians chapter 1 in Koine
As I mentioned in another thread, I'm trying to record some audio with a first-century Koine pronunciation. It's a bit different from Buth's scheme, though those who use Buth's scheme won't have trouble understanding it (hopefully). I wasn't sure where to post this so I'm sharing this here with anyo...

Audio of Philemon in Koine
I am attempting to switch over to a Koine (1st-2nd c. CE) pronunciation of Koine Greek from a restored Classical scheme. I've used Buth's books in the past so the pronunciation is not entirely new for me. Here's my attempt at reading Philemon from the SBLGNT: https://archive.org/details/philemon_201...

Re: Classical Greek or Latin after Koine for NT studies?
A bigger picture may be needed. Is "three semesters of German" sufficient for a German literature prof or historical researcher? My simple advice, given freely for 40 years now, is by all means become fluent in Hebrew before doing a PhD. The academy doesn't require this? So we are much th...
