Re: Word Order Puzzle in Mark 6

Because it is related to the δύο δύο in so far as they are being sent. I think the pronoun is unmarked, because it balances with the δύο δύο (perhaps a reciprocal pronoun of manner). If the δύο δύο was on the front of the balance that would more likely be marked. I think it depends on the weight yo...

Re: Word Order Puzzle in Mark 6

I considered emphasis on the δύο δύο, but if this fact was particularly important, it's odd that the following context doesn't do much of anything with it. This is the sending out of the twelve; wouldn't ἀποστέλλειν be the most important? I guess I should check my commentaries. Perhaps the answer l...

Re: Word Order Puzzle in Mark 6

There are two sentences in Mark 6 that differ over the placement of a personal pronoun. και ἤρξατο αύτοὺς ἀποστέλλειν δύο δύο και ἤρξατο διδάσκειν αύτοὺς πολλά For those of you who have a theory of Greek word order, what do you think accounts for the differing placements of αὐτούς relative to the ἤ...

Re: Self-teaching techniques

Currently, most of my self teaching falls into one of these categories: Reading passages of 1-4 chapters at a time, listening to audio as I go, without stopping to look up words. I do this for fluency. Writing questions and answers, in Greek, that correspond to each sentence in a short passage, con...

Re: Self-teaching techniques

About 4 years ago, over a 2 month period I memorized the story found in Mark 9:14-29. Using the "Hoffman Method," it took about 15 minutes of work per day. I began memorizing it by reading out loud with great expression and much gesturing. Then I got self conscious and stopped. Memorizing...

Re: Android support for polytonic Greek

Tavultesoft have an Android app, available through the Google Playstore, called 'Keyman Free'. After downloading it offers a wide range of languages from which it is simple to download a polytonic Greek keyboard. The app will produce text on a dedicated blank page, from which it is easy to copy-and...

Re: Android support for polytonic Greek

Now that I've switched from iPad to Samsung Galaxy s2 tablet, I'm wondering if anyone can update me on the status of typing Greek polytonic on Android 5.x? Has anyone found a good solution for this? It appears to me that my tablet will display polytonic fonts OK, but I don't see any obvious solution...

Re: Self-teaching techniques

Great topic! I would like to spin out a few thoughts in no particular order: The dawn of the information/knowledge era has made an enormous difference in this undertaking. Learning Greek - or anything else - on your own in 2016 is nothing like what it was just 75 years ago. We have all become self-l...

Re: H(ow h)as Greek ever actually helped you?

Second to flow of thought, pithy expression in Greek never fails to delight me... τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, γύναι; versus the overly formal -, " Dear woman, why do you involve me? " Jn 2:4 τὸ εἰ δύνῃ, versus a translation that (necessarily) misses the irritation - " If you can? " Mark 9:...
