Saint Paul. Les Epitres aux Thessaloniciens by B. Rigaux

One very old post on ibiblio.org mentions the book by B. Rigaux Saint Paul. Les Epitres aux Thessaloniciens (which discusses the word parousia): http://www.ibiblio.org/bgreek/test-archives/html4/1995-08/10323.html Does anyone know whether the above-mentioned book has been translated from French into...

Re: Formation of Words with the Preposition Συν

Stirling Bartholomew wrote: As you can see from RSV renderings, συντελείας τοῦ αἰῶνος is a process not a point. It is the consummation of all things. On the other hand τὸ τέλος is a point, which is why it is combined with the future verb ἥξει "will come." Since the synteleia is mentioned a...

Re: Formation of Words with the Preposition Συν

i have found no evidence that such a word exists, nor does it surprise me. There's a whole slew of words associated with the verb συντελέω: συντελέθω, συντέλεια, συντελειόω, συντελείωσις, συντελεσιουργία, συντέλεσις,συντέλεσμα, συντελεστής, συντελεστικός, συντελέστρια -- every one of them derived f...

Formation of Words with the Preposition Συν

Matthew 24:3 says: Καθημένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τοῦ ὄρους τῶν ἐλαιῶν προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ κατ᾽ ἰδίαν λέγοντες• εἰπὲ ἡμῖν, πότε ταῦτα ἔσται καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον τῆς σῆς παρουσίας καὶ συντελείας τοῦ αἰῶνος. Strong’s Greek Dictionary shows that the noun συντέλεια (which appears at Matthew 24:3) is formed f...

Re: Correct Translation of παρουσία

What seems to help in understanding the implications of the word παρουσία as used in Matt. 24:3 is Mark 13:4 and Lu 21:7. It should be kept in mind that all three passages are parallel. Mark 13:4 says: Εἰπὲ ἡμῖν, πότε ταῦτα ἔσται; Καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον ὅταν μέλλῃ πάντα ταῦτα συντελεῖσθαι. Lu 21:7 says: ...

Re: Correct Translation of παρουσία

There was an ongoing discussion on the translation of παρουσία in 2003 on ibiblio.org: http://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/b-greek/2003-April/025058.html Among other things, it was said: “ The conclusion on the basis of the points above is that the primary tool for an understanding of PAROUSIA is the...

Re: Correct Translation of παρουσία

When examining the context of the first occurrence of the word παρουσία in the Greek Scriptures, namely, in Matt. 24:3, it seems that παρουσία should be rendered there as “coming” or “arrival” instead of “presence.” Jesus’ disciples apparently wanted to know the sign leading up to Jesus’ future παρο...

Re: Correct Translation of παρουσία

Yes, of course, context usually serves as a determining factor in translation from any language. The reason why those questions were raised is that some persons argue that παρουσία should always be rendered as “ presence ” in the Greek Scriptures. I know of at least three Bible translations which re...

Correct Translation of παρουσία

Philippians 2:12: “Ωστε, ἀγαπητοί μου, καθὼς πάντοτε ὑπηκούσατε, μὴ ὡς ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ μου μόνον, ἀλλὰ νῦν πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἐν τῇ ἀπουσίᾳ μου, μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν κατεργάζεσθε.” The word παρουσία occurs 24 times in the Greek Scriptures. (Mt 24:3, 27, 37, 39; 1Co 15:23; 16:17; 2Co 7:...
