Rough or smooth breathing on hebrew names?

I've stumbled across the fact that some dictionaries use different breathing in Greek for Hebrew names, i.e. Abel is Ἅβελ in Loud and Nidia and BDAG. But its Ἄβελ in Strongs, and the "New American Standard Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible". Which is correct, or is it unclear? Is there a...

Re: θύρα in Acts 3:2

Thanks, I did check 6 dictionaries in Accordance, the definition I copied was arbitrary (they all seemed to say approximately the same thing).

This still doesn't solve the problem of understanding why the bible translations choose gate, rather than door.

θύρα in Acts 3:2

I notice that all translations translate θύρα τοῦ ἱεροῦ as "gate" rather than door. It had me wondering why this option was chosen? Is it due to historical understanding of the structure of the temple? My mental image of a "gate" does not align with what I imagine would have been...

Day's of the week (John 20:1)

Hi, Τῇ δὲ μιᾷ τῶν σαββάτων ⸀Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ ἔρχεται πρωῒ σκοτίας ἔτι οὔσης εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ βλέπει τὸν λίθον ἠρμένον ⸆ ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου. I was wondering why σαββάτον would be plural here? My English brain expects "on the first day of the week" to be singular in Greek. Is there some sma...

Re: Understanding the usage of +/- in linguistic papers?

Thanks Steve, that is really helpful. I am part way through this book and had not come across these responses yet. Clearly I need to spend more time in this book, but in the mean time, the 1 Corinthians 1:21 passage is a helpful one to contrast with. I did a survey of commentaries on Mark 1:11, incl...

Re: Understanding the usage of +/- in linguistic papers?

Annoyed with you, Randall, that you read my mind and stole my post. I have a colleague who when inordinately pleased about something likes to say "I could marry that." I don't feel that strongly about your post, but I could buy it roses and take it out to dinner. And you sounded almost as...

For completeness, perhaps Campbell would be better summarised like this:

Re: Understanding the usage of +/- in linguistic papers?

Thanks both of you for your responses, I was not aware of that BBR issue, I need to dig into that. To check I understand correctly, using a diagram from Decker (simply because that is what I have in front of me), this diagram suggests regarding the "tense-forms" in Koine Greek: 1. The verb...

δεῖ and researching words

Apparently δεῖ only found in the LXX and the GNT in present and imperfect tense-forms. Although it is found one time in the NT in the future form. However, my accordance search in my limited library tells me it is used three times in the aorist form in Philo. I know the GNT/LXX is not that large, bu...
