Re: βαπτιζόμενοι ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν

[Two questions: Is the preposition ὑπὲρ (c.gen.) ever used of self interest? Is the preposition ever used with a middle-passive form? It's going to take me awhile, but I'll answer that ASAP. I have no idea right now. ~Off to find the edge pieces of the puzzle ;) As a beginner, I really think you sh...

Re: βαπτιζόμενοι ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν

John, just a note of encouragement. Many of the participants on this list have literally decades of working with Greek, do or have taught Greek on a regular basis, and very cheerfully love to help beginners see it for themselves. It would be a good idea to accept what they say and and add it to you...

Re: βαπτιζόμενοι ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν

I thought the final genitive phrase was encapsulated within the accusative prompts τί. Does that make sense? Actually, it doesn't – at least, not to me. The only issue relevant to your original proposal is the case of the object of ὑπὲρ. The meaning of ὑπὲρ is determined by the case it governs. Not...

Re: βαπτιζόμενοι ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν

Let me satisfy your curiosity. ὑπὲρ governing the accusative means 'beyond, above' or such. ὑπὲρ governing the genitive means 'concerning, on behalf of' or the like. You're trying to take the accusative meaning and import it into the use of ὑπὲρ with the genitive. Well thanks for pointing out that ...

βαπτιζόμενοι ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν

Hello again everyone. Ἐπεὶ τί ποιήσουσιν οἱ βαπτιζόμενοι ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν εἰ ὅλως νεκροὶ οὐκ ἐγείρονται τί καὶ βαπτίζονται ὑπὲρ τῶν νεκρῶν Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead? ~1st Corinthians 15:29 After lookin...

Re: Is this true of participles?

On B-Greek, we don't discuss doctrine. We don't claim that any web site is full of false doctrine or true doctrine or whatever. People motivated by doctrine are rarely good sources for language instruction. Naming specific people or web sites that are highly doctrinal here tends to be troll bait, I...

Re: Is this true of participles?

I've never heard of this before. I found it in none of the literature. Whether this was true-ish of Greek participles I couldn't be sure. Spanish has two tenses for the past tense, one for ongoing past action (broke a glass every Saturday), and one for stuff that has an apparent conclusion or immedi...

Is this true of participles?

I found this quote on a website that discusses Koine participles. Is what XXXX said true? Here is a quote from Mr. XXXX response to one of the questions I emailed him. Regarding the difference between the present participle and the present tense, there is a distinct difference. When a writer uses th...

Thanks Stephen,

I have some learning ahead of me. I downloaded a few Greek apps and will get the references you mentioned, budget permitting :)

Thanks everyone,

Re: Squinting Modifiers

Okay, now I totally get it. For some reason I glossed right over the seq. ἐν part of the second definition. I suppose all those abbreviations are good in that they eliminate about 1,500 additional pages or more, but man it's almost as easy to follow as regular expressions . At least regular express...
