John 1:9

I have a feeling this has been asked before, but I can't find it, so... ἦν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινὸν ὃ φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον. Can ἐρχόμενον be understood as neuter nominative singular (agreeing with φῶς) as well as masculine accusative singular? Is there a grammatical reason it ca...

Re: Introduction

Sure, all that makes sense. I only mentioned my experience with a modern language because as a teacher, I found I couldn't even get behind the goals that many worked towards, and my goals were to them utterly alien. So it was nice to see similar goals from people with different approached. I see now...

Re: Introduction

I'm not especially worried about encountering strong and differing positions. On the contrary, I'm really glad to see that people on this board have thoughts about learning Greek. It makes me feel that, in a pinch, I can ask for opinions here and get something from the mass of material that folks of...

Re: Introduction

Thank you for the reply, Thomas. This all sounds good. My NT has no dictionary in the back, however -- can you suggest a solid one that will be serve as a solid NT lexical reference for years? I've already had some participles and infinitives in this textbook -- very fun stuff, and I feel like I hav...

Re: Introduction

I'm going to dare to speak again on this thread, assuming it's not too old... I've made some progress and am about halfway through Shirley's online textbook, doing the exercises and working on all the vocab. If I make it through the whole book...what's reasonable next? Parse a whole book of the NT t...

government of τηρέω

I've been working my way through the online textbook by Dr. Shirley that was recommended -- super introduction, thanks to the those who suggested it and especially to the author. One question from 16.3, number 9 and 16.5, number 8, copied below: ὑµεῖς τηρεῖτε ἑαυτοὺς καθαροί. οἱ ἁµαρτωλοὶ οὐ τηροῦσι...

Re: Introduction

I had already guessed that (that Shirley's book was good, not that it was better than a book I haven't seen), and have started working with it. Once I get a few more lessons into it, I'm sure I'll be back with questions. This place has already had great advice for a rank beginner.
