"We have no such custom" as being contentious???
According to Brad Price, in 1 Cor 11:16 “the word contentious is a masculine adjective in the nominative case and the word custom is a feminine noun in the accusative case. If these words belonged together, there would be grammatical agreement in both gender (masculine/ feminine) and case (nominativ...

Meaning of HUPARCHWN
Have I interpreted the word hypárchōn (HUPARCHWN) correctly?: "In 1 Cor 11:3, 7 we are told man is “being” (hypárchōn) God’s “image and glory.” Greek hypárchōn is composed of the elements hypo (under) and archṓ (begin, be first, rule), and literally translates as 'under-beginning' (Thayer's Gre...

Literal translation of AUTODIKH / AUTODIKEIN
Just wondering if anyone can help me with parsing and determining how the word αὐτοδίκῃ (its Suda entry is below) is related to the verb αὐτοδικεῖν, and what would be the best ultra-literal translation of it. Is αὐτοδίκῃ an adverb? Would “self-adjudicating,” “self-determining,” or “self-pleading” be...

Re: Authentein andros as "exercising man's authority"
Thanks, will endeavour to do that as I improve in my understanding. Also, to the other Stephen (Carlson), sorry if I was a bit short or opinionated.

Re: Authentein andros as "exercising man's authority"
Hey Stephen, thanks so much for that explanation.
It was really helpful and detailed, and I really appreciate it.
I will stick with the usual translation "over a man."

Re: Authentein andros as "exercising man's authority"
I've written the following as part of a book on gender roles in the church, but have still to have it checked by "professionals." Anyway, to my mind this info seems to suggest "exercise power/authority": About AD 150 (less than one hundred years after Paul wrote his letter to Tim...

Re: Authentein andros as "exercising man's authority"
Hey, thanks for your reply. I've done a lot of research on authentein and concluded that it most likely means exercise power/authority, but I'm mainly just concerned about how it relates to the genitive (see original post). Any thoughts?

Authentein andros as "exercising man's authority"
Is it possible to interpret auqentein andros in 1 Tim as “exercising man’s authority.” That is, for the genitive to construe “man’s” rather than “over man.” I realize that “over man” is the standard interpretation due to the genitive normally signifying that over which verbs of ruling are being exer...

Translation of Papyrus Tebtunis 15
Hi, I’m just a beginner in Greek but I’m trying to translate a passage from Papyrus Tebtunis 15 myself due to no ready access to a translation. The passage is online at: http://epiduke.cch.kcl.ac.uk/2008-07-22/html/p.fam.tebt/p.fam.tebt.15.html but I’ve written it out below (vertically) with some pr...
