Re: syntax of disjunctive phrase (Matt. 5:36)

I went ahead and cranked out examples of split constituents, posting it here: http://jonathanrobie.biblicalhumanities.org/assets/SplitConstituents.html Thank you, Jonathan! That data looks delicious. I did notice that Matthew 5:36 is not included in these results, that's because the treebank analyz...

Re: syntax of disjunctive phrase (Matt. 5:36)

I can easily do queries that find split constituents vs. constituents that wholly precede the verb, but I don't yet have an explanation that fits all the data I've seen. I'd love to hear one. I can't easily do queries that find split constituents vs. constituents that wholly precede the verb, but i...

Re: syntax of disjunctive phrase (Matt. 5:36)

But my question remains: what are some possible reasons for the constituent order seen in NA27? How deep do you want to go here? There are a number quite non-traditional grammar concepts we'll need to work through in order to get to laying out the reasons. Well, let's say that I'm willing to be cha...

Re: syntax of disjunctive phrase (Matt. 5:36)

Something may be learned looking at the variations in the witnesses to the text. Matt. 5:36 R-P μητε εν τη κεφαλη σου ομοσης οτι ου δυνασαι μιαν τριχα λευκην η μελαιναν ποιησαι NA27 μήτε ἐν τῇ κεφαλῇ σου ὀμόσῃς, ὅτι οὐ δύνασαι μίαν τρίχα λευκὴν ποιῆσαι ἢ μέλαιναν. The Byzantine text including the T...

Intro: chaslaw

Hello, I'm Charlie Law. My screen name is presently chaslaw, but the moderator may change it. Though I took four semesters of New Testament Greek in the mid-1980s and a fifth course in 2006, somehow I've never managed to internalize the language very well. Over the past 15 years I've relied heavily ...

Re: syntax of disjunctive phrase (Matt. 5:36)

I just wanted to comment on this little detail: the reason it seems counterintuitive in this case is because you cannot do that in English (or in many other languages), not because it's logically counterintuitive. In English "white or black" must be connected because you cannot say "...

Re: syntax of disjunctive phrase (Matt. 5:36)

Setting aside for just a moment the theoretical discussion, I went looking for examples of this phrase. Lots of samples of what you would expect. One author alternated: Joannes Damascenus Dialectica sive Capita philosophica (recensio fusior) Section 58, line 23 οὐ γὰρ ἀνάγκη πᾶν σῶμα ἢ λευκὸν εἶναι...

Moderator Note Please let a moderator know what your real name is so that we can change your login name. Another, somewhat related idea, is an afterthought in a separate unit "... that you cannot make one hair white--or black." At any rate, hyperbaton is a more general phenomenon, and thi...
