Strange teachings

I keep hearing, what I would refer to as absurd Greek teachings that are being promulgated by those whom people think are expert Greek teachers. I just wanted to throw these two concepts out for those who study and teach Greek to comment on so I can have a link I can send lay people to who are being...

Revelation 17:5

I was reading the NET Bible notes on Revelation 17:5 which state: Some translations consider the word μυστήριον (mustērion, “mystery”) a part of the name written (“Mystery Babylon the Great,” so KJV, NIV), but the gender of both ὄνομα (onoma, “name”) and μυστήριονare neuter, while the gender of “Bab...

Textual Criticism Question

When did words starting with εγλ get changed to εκλ? For instance: Hebrews 12:3 εκλελυμενοι P13 εγλελυμενοι P46 εκλυομενοι (01, 02) Also interesting: 1 Peter 2:4 εκγλεκτον (P72) Apparently had changed but was copying an earlier manuscript that had εγλεκτον, I would presume. Obviously same for εγβ an...

Re: BDAG listings

Okay, sorry I figured the phrases were interchangeable, I wasn’t trying to put words in your mouth. I appreciate that definition. That is helpful. It seems like the theologians that promote root fallacy, make it an etymological argument. I have never seen it defined period, just the terms used, so I...

Re: BDAG listings

Thanks for the reply. How would you define “verbal cognate.” I had always thought a verbal cognate in Greek was if a noun was believed to be derived directly from a verb. I.e, it doesn’t have a verbal cognate if it was derived from another noun for instance. If you follow the etymology of some Greek...

BDAG listings

I have a question about the verbs BDAG lists in its definitions for nouns sometimes. Take for instance ἀποστασία on pg 120. It starts with "s. ἀφίστημι," s. means "see." I assume that BDAG is saying that ἀφίστημι is an associated verb for ἀποστασία, and is not a reference to it b...

Root Fallacy

One thing I hear from theologians that promote root fallacy, is that all nouns come from verbs. I assume they are referencing Strong's which often gives what he believed was the etymology of each word. I think Liddel-Scott does the same thing, but I generally use BDAG which doesn't. I can't recall e...

Re: Previous reference in Hebrews?

Barry, thanks for responding. I just realized I didn’t post a crucial aspect of the argument. Since τῶν ἁγίων could be genitive neuter plural (holy place of some kind) or genitive masculine plural (holy people/saints), selecting the most logical would seem the best way to go. I agree with you, I dou...

Previous reference in Hebrews?

It seems to me that ἅγιος follows a complex previous reference scheme for all occurrences in Hebrews, with exceptions of mentions to the Holy Spirit. If this is true, then I think τῶν ἁγίων in Hebrews 8:2 is mistranslated, and should be “saints,” instead of “holy place” or ”sanctuary.” The first occ...
