Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

An interesting typo ... thinking boró. Amazing. Perhaps you will help someone reconstruct the pronunciation a couple thousand years from now. ;) Modern Hebrew biblical words/roots show up about 85% in a Hebrew newspaper, while I calculate closer to 60% for modern Greek. Helpful? Absolutely! Distrac...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

Don't be confused by the logic but consider some facts. Hebrew is simply much closer between dialects, so much so, that one should point out that 100% of modern Hebrew morphology maps into classical Hebrew and the words themselves, when attested, are the same. Not so, modern Greek. For example, mod...

I am confused by your logic here. Hebrew in Israel? Φυσικά.
Naturally? Of course? Why not φυσικῶν?
Because that is the way the language is spoken today—but that didn't seem to hinder your comprehension! :)

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

Randall, I have looked into IBLT at the commendation of Scott McQuinn. I am very impressed by it, Θεός μαζί σας! Then you will know why the school/center needs to be in Israel rather than Athens. To become fluent in Hebrew, all dialects and periods, there is no more efficient place than Israel. Howe...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

My ideal 3-year curriculum would be as follows: ... Benjamin, I could quibble with a couple of points—and might be wrong—but overall I think your three year curriculum would be stout. It is better defined than my idealistic sketch. I would love to see it become a reality. How many credit hours are ...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

Well, here we run into a problem, and that is the fact that there are no native speakers of ancient Greek. No one is arguing this, Barry. The key argument is that the ability to speak with a native in another dialect of the same language outweighs not speaking with a native at all in the target dia...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

Could I at that point speak ancient Greek fluently if I hopped on the TARDIS and ended up in 3rd century Athens and the TARDIS's translation matrix failed? Not walking out the door, certainly. Could I deal with pretty much any ancient Greek literature with my lexicon and occasional grammar referenc...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

Let me perhaps sum up my general question in the following manner (again, thinking practically as a teacher). Let's assume the following ... - class meets 1 hour per week three times a week - total curriculum is 2 years long - ultimate objective is proficiency in Koine Greek (not necessarily the NT...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

There is a unique continuity and unity in the Greek language, where most of the change happens between Homeric and Classical, but from that period, to the Hellenistic, Eastern Roman Empire, Under Ottoman Occupation and Modern times, all the way up to the linguistic reform in early 80’s, the languag...
