Re: Acts 21:25

I’m having a hard time understanding how you keep going on with this. I’m just at a loss. It means “to avoid.” That’s what it means. I don’t know why you keep on saying the same thing that is the OPPOSITE of what it means! You don't seem to have checked dictionnaries. Thayer (2.b) (https://biblehub...

Re: Acts 21:25

Well, here I've tried to make the translation clearer : And concerning those of the nations who have believed, we sent an epistle, having judged them not keeping such thing except [having judged them] keeping by themselves idol-sacrifices, and blood, and a strangled thing, and whoredom. I hope it wi...

Re: Acts 21:25

You are conveying exactly the OPPOSITE meaning of what the apostles wanted to pass on to the non-Jewish believers. They wanted to convey that they should not feel burdened to keep the Torah except that they must not engage in idolatry, eating sacrificed food, eating blood, eating strangled meats, o...

Re: Acts 21:25

what does “having judging” mean? How can you translate κρίναντες with two participles? Wouldn’t you really mean “having judged”? Absolutely, that's an error I made, I meant "having judged". In the middle voice, it means “to be on one’s guard against, look out for, avoid” (BDAG) and takes ...

Re: Acts 21:25

Sure, here is the greek text of Acts 21:25 :
Περὶ δὲ τῶν πεπιστευκότων ἐθνῶν ἡμεῖς ἐπεστείλαμεν, κρίναντες μηδὲν τοιοῦτον τηρεῖν αὐτούς, εἰ μὴ φυλάσσεσθαι αὐτοὺς τό τε εἰδωλόθυτον καὶ τὸ αἷμα καὶ πνικτὸν καὶ πορνείαν.

Gustav.

Acts 21:25

Hi, I was reading Acts 21:25, and thought that it might be translated as follow (from the byzantine text) : And concerning those of the nations who have believed, we sent an epistle, having judging them not keeping such thing, except keeping to themselves both idol-sacrifices, and blood, and a stran...

Re: Titus 2:3 "καλοδιδασκάλους"

I didn't kow this website, it looks great, thanks for sharing.
EDIT: neither of them mention in any way a possibility that the word wouldn't refer to the older women.
Interesting Eeli, thanks.

Re: Titus 2:3 "καλοδιδασκάλους"

If one reads 1 Tim 2:12 in full, one gets that Paul does not permit women to teach men. I haven't ear any ambiguity in greek (neither in the some good english translations, cf. the KJV) : Paul does not permit women to teach. If you don't agree with the reading of 1 Tim 2:12, I invite you to try to ...

Re: Titus 2:3 "καλοδιδασκάλους"

This is a compound adjective, or sometimes called a two-termination adjective. Compound adjectives only have the masculine (or what is normally masculine) and neuter endings. The context tells you whether the adjective is masculine or feminine. Thanks for the precision James, it helps. If we isolat...
