Re: Romans 1:20

Just as a point of order, the main discussion language of the Forum is English, but we have a subforum "Writing Greek" designed for just such a purpose. It's been pretty inactive there, but I would love to see it used more. I just posted a short story there. Have at! Maybe some enterprisi...

Re: Romans 1:20

This is my goal. I have just completed a BLC first semester in Greek. That was done speaking as much as possible in Greek, including asking questions about the Greek and answering them Ἑλληνιστί where possible. οὐ δύναμαι ἐρωτᾶν ἤ ἀποκρίνεσθαι πάντα Ἑλληνιστὶ ἀλλὰ πειρῶμαι. At least in class I have...

Re: Romans 1:20

The general practice on BGreek is to discuss the Greek rather than translations. I know, I've been told something like this before. But I have a question for everybody, not just you. The Greek consists of more than just syntax. So is there any way we can talk about the semantics of Greek expression...

Re: Romans 1:20

The participle, in turn, is adverbial of attendant circumstance (“and are being understood”) and modifies καθορᾶται (3 sg. pres. pass. indic. of καθοράω, “perceive, notice”). The prefix intensifies καθοράω (“clearly seen”), which echoes τὰ ἀόρατα and creates the rhetorical device annominato by usin...

Re: Romans 1:20

OK, I'm sorry I even mentioned Kant. I didn't mean to suggest that I take him to be my guide to understanding Rom 1:20, or that anybody else should. What I'm really after is how the word νοούμενα fits into the sentence. Various translations I've looked at would seem to read the same even if that wor...

Romans 1:20

τὰ γὰρ ἀόρατα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ κτίσεως κόσμου τοῖς ποιήμασιν νοούμενα καθορᾶται ἥ τε ἀΐδιος αὐτοῦ δύναμις καὶ θειότης εἰς τὸ εἶναι αὐτοὺς ἀναπολογήτους I need help parsing this phrase. I have several questions: 1. Since ἀόρατα is technically an adjective, it might be being used here either as a substantive...

Re: Mark 2:3 - could missing antecedent be intentional?

Now we come to: καὶ ἔρχονται φέροντες πρὸς αὐτὸν παραλυτικὸν αἰρόμενον ὑπὸ τεσσάρων. There's no clear signal that ἔρχονται and συνήχθησαν do not have the same subject. Grammatically, they could, and there's not a clear shift in context. I was surprised to see new characters introduced in this way, ...

Re: Mark 2:3 - could missing antecedent be intentional?

καὶ ἔρχονται φέροντες πρὸς αὐτὸν παραλυτικὸν αἰρόμενον ὑπὸ τεσσάρων. The lack of an antecedent here is striking, especially when the people introduced with this verb are so important to the following dialog. Could this be intentional? If so, what do you think the purpose is? I'm not sure I'm follow...
