Re: Translation of the Words Καταστροφή, Συντέλεια, and Κατάλυσις

Since the Greek text uses the phrase συντέλειαν τὴν κατάλυσιν (where the two words are linked by the article τὴν), this seems to indicate that the two words are rendered as “culminate and end” in the translation, which may mean that the translator changed the order of the renderings of the word κατ...

Re: Can a genitive be both objective and subjective?

Sorry, I meant nuance in the description of the genitive in the pdf. So then the "plenary genitive" is just plain myth and the pdf is wrong? I was fine with the explanation but when I saw that I figured I'd better run it by y'all. I don't like believing something based on a dubious source. Quite. T...

Re: Translation of the Words Καταστροφή, Συντέλεια, and Κατάλυσις

In the interests of encouraging you actually to learn the language, I'm not going to answer your question directly, but I am going to note that the translator completely restructures the syntax into good English, and that obscures what's actually going on in the Greek. Note that your words of concer...

Re: "How do we know how Koine Greek was pronounced?"

I think it's quite nicely done. In a recent discussion on this, someone asked the question (and I'm paraphrasing, because I don't remember exactly when or where the discussion took place), "But how do we know which vowels to start with? How do I know that ι doesn't actually equal ει like the ei in w...

Some forums (I think the Biblical Hebrew one) requires that each post be signed with one's real first name and real last name, or that this applies to their usernames. Is that true for this forum too? Should I make my username my real name?

Re: The Words Συντελεία and Τέλος in Mt 24

Bill, I think they are essential synonyms, although both the Greek and Latin translations are quite interesting.

Re: Translating Origen's harder section

Thanks for the points of grammar I missed. The way I understand is: Φαμὲν τὸ μικρότερον περὶ αὐτοῦ λέγειν τοῦ Χριστοῦ· We say ‘the least’ is speaking of him (who is) of Christ. Is that right?. That looks right. I am still especially puzzled by the structure in (20) and have made another attempt. Do...

Re: Apocopic word forms

Don't know why anyone would want to do this, but the reason that it changes to the aspirated form is because it precedes an aspiration without and intervening letter. ΜΕΤΑ would be the correct form, and so with all of them.
