γραφὴ ζῶσα

On November 19 in the 1:00 pm session of the Global Education and Research Technology section of the Society of Biblical Literature meeting in San Antonio, Jonathan Robie and I will present our ongoing work on a communicative Koine Greek course. I would love to see you there. Here is the abstract of...

Re: John 1:1-9 with teacher's notes

Thank you very much for your feedback, Wes. Since Jonathan has already addressed some of your questions, I'll stick more to filling in some background on my role in this project and where I'm coming from. While I taught Greek for many years (both Hellenistic Koine and Classical) I used much more tra...

Re: Guinea pigs

It is easier to learn an alphabet, if the students already know some words that they then have a need to write down. Alphabet is the basis of reading an unknown text, rather than of language learning per se . Excellent point, Stephen. The lessons on the alphabet at Greek-Language.com were written i...

Re: Lesson on Matthew 2:12-13

Thank you both, Stephen Hughes and Stephen Carlson, for the comments on accentuation. It is a tremendous luxury to have dedicated readers of this forum willing to offer such corrections!

If you would like to see the updated version of the lesson, taking into account the comments that have been provided in this thread, you can do that at http://Greek-Language.com/grklinguist/?p=1841.

Re: Lesson on Matthew 2:12-13

Actually the active ἅπτειν is causative, "bring something into contact with another" while the middle ἁπτεσθαι is intransitive, "come into contact." That distinction is not new to Koine. The active ἄπτειν is used of setting fire to a lamp, for instance. Right. Causation is a bet...

Re: Lesson on Matthew 2:12-13

Stephen: Your exposition of the meaning of χρηματίζειν is wonderful. That's exactly what made me struggle with whether to word to use the word in the lesson. I am well aware of the range of usage of χρηματίζειν. It is not at all like the English word "warn", but is as you explain, a more n...

Re: Lesson on Matthew 2:12-13

Stephen: I failed to mention in the response above that I understand your reservations about χρηματίζειν. Χρηματίζειν (+inf.) is narrative or descriptive verb, not a dialogue verb. I struggled for a while with this because there are several words in Ancient Greek that are used in reference to warnin...

Re: Lesson on Matthew 2:12-13

Perhaps you could consider Μὴ ἅψαι τὸ κιβώτιον. Χρηματίζώ σοι μὴ ἅψασθαι ἐκείνο. Ἐπικίνδυνον γὰρ ἐστίν. Μὴ ἅψασθε τὸ κιβώτιον. Χρηματίζω ἡμῖν μὴ ἅψασθαι ἐκείνο. Ἐπικίνδυνον γὰρ ἐστίν. Thank you, Stephen, for the addition of Μὴ ἅψαι τὸ κιβώτιον. Referring explicitly to the box (in addition to pointi...

Re: Lesson on Matthew 2:12-13

This is the first of five one hour lessons introducing the Greek participle, using the same teaching approach that Micheal uses when teaching ESL in the public schools. Micheal, can you outline what kinds of things you might do in the rest of the first five lessons on the participle? Typically my l...
