Re: Is ἀρσενοκοίτης Biblical dialect for ἀρρενοκοίτης?

Thank you, Tony. That's something useful I learned today! That seems to leave us, then, back where we started, without a single occurrence of the word ἀρσενοκοίτης (in either spelling) outside the NT. Is that it? The NT occurrence is not the only one ever recorded, rather there is none other known ...

Re: Is ἀρσενοκοίτης Biblical dialect for ἀρρενοκοίτης?

According to Liddell & Scott (first link below), the compound ἀρσενοκοίτης is found, just once, in Diogenes Laertius, at the reference 6:65. The entry in the old 7th edition of LS has misled you. It reads "Diog. L. 6. 65 (ubi v. Menag.)" The parenthesis is intended to indicate that th...

Re: Meaning of “πρηνὴς γενόμενος” in Acts 1:18

While πρήνης is found in the sense prone , it is generally collocated either with a verb in the semantic domain of falling or a verb in the semantic domain of being in a lying down posture. The verb γενόμενος becoming fits neither of these. F. H. Chase wrote an article over a century ago in which he...

Re: "written/slain from the foundation of the world" - Revelation 13:8

That ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου is separated from γέγραπται by twelve words is not an argument I find convincing. Nine of those words form one phrase ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τῆς ζωῆς τοῦ ἀρνίου τοῦ ἐσφαγμένου. That phrase states where the names are on record, and the next phrase ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου states at what p...

Re: exclamation or question?

Since questions can be used as exclamations, maybe we're dealing with a false dichotomy. Why not both? That may be reasonable, but would it not be necessary to specify what kind of a question? To my mind the sentence is not merely a question for information, whereas some translations in English, Ge...

Re: Examples of syntactic ambiguity

I'm suspecting that genuinely ambiguous sentences, given context, are actually not as common as I had suspected. Agreed. Question versus statement is another. Here are several that come to mind, and there are no doubt others. 1 Cor. 6.4 βιωτικὰ μὲν οὖν κριτήρια ἐὰν ἔχητε, τοὺς ἐξουθενημένους ἐν τῇ ...

Re: Acts 15:20 and πορνείας

In addition to Jonathan Robie's references, there is discussion of a restricted meaning for πορνεία in this context in an article in The Bible Translator by Roger Omanson. R. L. Omanson, 'How Does It All Fit Together? Thoughts on Translating Acts 1.15-22 and 15.19-21' BT Vol. 41.4 Oct. 1990. The rel...

Re: Matt 1:2 article usage

Middleton's explanation looks plausible. However, Stephen Levinsohn looks at the matter rather differently in his Discourse Features of New Testament Greek , 2nd ed. 2000, ch. 9 The Article with Substantives, p.159. Then there is the genealogy of Matt. 1:1ff.; each new point of departure/proposition...

Re: Gender concordance with the article

If you can get hold of it, there is a helpful discussion of this in N. Clayton Croy "The Messianic Whippersnapper: Did Jesus Use a Whip on People in the Temple (John 2:15)?" Journal of Biblical Literature 128 (2009) 555-68. He does include discussion of the grammatical question you are ask...

Re: Word Suffixes

Another option in English for Word-Formation is Vol. 2 of Moulton's A Grammar of New Testament Greek, available online at https://archive.org/details/grammarofne ... 3/mode/2up
Also not for the faint-hearted, but it does have a useful Index of Words and Forms.
