Re: Ps 29 (30) v6
It's easier to follow in the second colon because the translator chose to make it a prepositional phrase. So then of course you need something to nominalise the adverb. However, it's useful to know that τὸ ἑσπέρας was already a stock expression. My thought as to how the phrase developed is that mayb...

Ps 29 (30) v6
In Ps 29 (30) v6, what is the force of the neuter article?
τὸ ἑσπέρας αὐλισθήσεται κλαυθμὸς
Is it because ἑσπέρας by itself (or with τῆς) would be ambiguous?

Re: ἐξίστημι in Acts 8:11
Thanks, everyone! This thread has been like a mystery novel with new twists in every post. On balance, it seems like ἐξεστακέναι here is indeed transitive. The backstory is: I was in a reading group and we were looking at examples of the accusative + infinitive construction, of which there are a few...

ἐξίστημι in Acts 8:11
προσεῖχον δὲ αὐτῷ διὰ τὸ ἱκανῷ χρόνῳ ταῖς μαγείαις ἐξεστακέναι αὐτούς. I believe this is the only example of this verb in the perfect in the NT. Is it transitive or intransitive (is Simon the subject, or is αὐτούς)? BDAG lists this example as trans., but then says that the perf. is intrans.! And LSJ...

Pronunciation of initial I in Semitic names
What is the value of ι at the beginning of Semitic names like Ἰησοῦς, Ἰερουσαλήμ, Ἰουδαία, etc.? I always took it to be a semivowel [j], but...?

Re: Recommend papyri for teaching?
Jason has the gist of it. If I get the chance - and it's not my course, I have to sell the idea - I want to push the students outside their comfort zone a bit.
I was hoping that someone had done my work for me by creating a package like Hayes and Nimis's Lucian materials. Oh well.

Recommend papyri for teaching?
I may have the opportunity to teach a session at a NT Greek refresher course ("I kinda learnt Greek at seminary 25 years ago and haven't really used it since") and I'd like to give the students some papyri to read, to give them a taste of "real-world" Koine. Could anyone suggest ...

Re: syntax of disjunctive phrase (Matt. 5:36)
Coming late to the conversation, but this topic intrigues me. More than once I've read about the Iconicity Principle, specifically the Proximity principle: conceptual distance tends to match with linguistic distance ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iconicity ) or The principle of “iconicity of contig...

Re: ἰάομαι Why middle?
the regular usage of the middle voice indicates acceptance of healing as the deliberate exercise of the healer's power. One might perhaps compare πολιτεύειν, "be a citizen" and πολιτεύεσθαι "exercise one's citizenship." That's the exact opposite of Mike's suggestion of spontaneo...
