The Viability of Granville Sharp's Rules 5 & 6?

I just heard an apologists throwing around Greek appeal to these rules tonight & wanted to get your angle. It seems like I recall reading a stinging refutation to these rules on this forum years ago by someone from Athens named Vasileios Tsialas (?). Regardless, was just curious what your take on th...

Re: How to Identify a Permissive/Causative Middle Voice Verb?

But I would submit that this exercise in semantics is beside point of the middle, which is in fact to deprofile the agent. Is it really "besides the point"? But you're right about its function in discourse. Another misused label, infamous in this forum, is "divine passive". Basically it's nothing b...

Re: How to Identify a Permissive/Causative Middle Voice Verb?

Often when some people say "not a true a middle," what they mean is "not (directly) reflexive." But scholars of the middle have known for a long time that the reflexive is just one of several senses of the middle, and not the most frequent for that matter. So part of the problem is that people mean...

Re: How to Identify a Permissive/Causative Middle Voice Verb?

Wow. Just as I suspected. Although only Greek I (just beginning to tamper w. Greek II) - red flags are already going up when I hear assertions like this since I realize there's absolutely nothing in the actual morphology to demand this. However, as mentioned above, I think Wallace, Robertson, et al....

How to Identify a Permissive/Causative Middle Voice Verb?

Hope this is an acceptable location to place this, but, just a quick question. I heard an assertion from a Greek student yesterday that κείρασθαι in I Cor. 11.6 appears as either a permissive or causative middle voice. Having only Greek I under my belt I am not clear on how to identify the various f...

Re: πέμψαντός in J. 6.38?

From the perspective of text linguistics and discourse analysis, clauses (B) and (C) are tied in with (A) and both flow from (A). (A) ὅτι καταβέβηκα ἀπὸ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ (B) οὐχ ἵνα ποιῶ τὸ θέλημα τὸ ἐμὸν (C) ἀλλὰ τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με Here's one problem I see with his reasoning on the basis of syn...

Re: πέμψαντός in J. 6.38?

I said, "“From what I understand (again, I am only Greek II), it's important to remember that in substantive uses of the participle, the idea of time or even aspect is rather in the background. And this is a substantival participle, functioning as a noun, and that's really all it does. It isn't act...

Re: πέμψαντός in J. 6.38?

Okay, got it. I recently purchased Cambpell's work on verbal aspect: https://www.olivetree.com/store/product.php?productid=34141 I like Dr. Campbell's teaching style, but will definitely look into Rijksbaron. Just be aware that Campbell's understanding of the verb differs significantly from that of...

Re: πέμψαντός in J. 6.38?

If I understood correctly, the passages in boldface font in your previous posts were someone else's and you want to know what we think about it. Right? Yes, this is correct. Well, here's what I think about it: it's nonsense. Someone tries to prove his opinion by cleverly confusing us with verbose l...

Re: πέμψαντός in J. 6.38?

Robertson is hard to read, but an excellent source of examples to illustrate most things, and really quite good if you learn to read him. Not the first place to learn new concept, but perhaps a great place to look for the examples once you have read an easier explanation elsewhere. Find 2-3 grammar...
