Re: Discourse Features of New Testament Greek

Perhaps R.Buth could clarify why this is being analysed as topic -focus rather than topic - comment. I used "salient" as a synonym for 'comment' and I reserve the word 'focus' for non-default salient information, in other words for me Focus is a technical term meaning pragmatically marked salient i...

Re: Discourse Features of New Testament Greek

Dr. Buth, the way you said it was much more straightforward for me. :) Thank all of you for your replies.

Discourse Features of New Testament Greek

1 Cor. 5:5a παραδοῦναι τὸν τοιοῦτον τῷ Σατανᾷ εἰς ὄλεθρον τῆς σαρκός. Levinsohn states that in this example, "the more focal constituent (τῷ Σατανᾷ) is placed after the more supportive one (τὸν τοιοῦτον)." Would someone please clarify how he arrived at this conclusion? I think I am mostly confused b...

Re: Romans 5:20

I don't really have much trouble reading greek with fluidity at this point, as long as I know the vocabulary. Right now I have a vocabulary of about 3500 words. I would say about 95% of the time I can use context clues or prior knowledge to get through what I don't know, but I always stop and look t...

Re: Romans 5:20

Thanks for the links. I will look at them more when I have the time. Usually, I don't have the patience to look at the uncials online. When I end up fighting with the format to see more than a portion at a time and waiting thirty seconds or more for the next page to load, my enjoyment goes down expo...

I also apologize for the text being cut off. I did not realize it had been until now. I don't know how to edit the original post.

Re: Romans 5:20

It is offline, unfortunately. It is a transcription of Comfort and Barrett's "Text of the Earliest NT Greek Manuscripts." I typed it up for personal use in caps to simulate the type of font that I would encounter in the uncials. I intended it to be a way to ease into looking at those types manuscrip...

Re: Romans 5:20

Thank you, both. I am sorry for giving you the text in uncials, but it is the text I had before me. Also, it may or may not be found in the *text* of a critical edition, because it is a transcription of an early greek papyrus. I am trying to learn to read this type of script (or read it more easily ...

Re: Romans 5:20

P.S. Particularly the part that is messing me up is the ΟΥΔΕ section.
