Genesis 34:3
καὶ προσέσχεν τῇ ψυχῇ Δινας τῆς θυγατρὸς Ιακωβ καὶ ἠγάπησεν τὴν παρθένον καὶ ἐλάλησεν κατὰ τὴν διάνοιαν τῆς παρθένου αὐτῇ. Since we know from verse 2 that Dinah was raped before this, the word παρθένος doesn't fit the English meaning of the word virgin. Apart from cultic uses, did the word originall...

Re: Looking up English words derived from Greek
I have two suggestions for you. First, if your copy of the Greek New Testament includes a short lexicon just read through it. You'll be surprised how many Greek words are nearly identical to their English counterpart. Second, You might want to look at an older book by Charles Barrett Brown called Th...

Re: Mark 15:2 συ λέγεις
Compare this with Matthew 26:25 where Judas asks if he is the one who will betray Jesus and he answers, "Σὺ εἶπας." Considering the similarity of the two passages I would have to say this does mean "yes." But the rest of the disciples did not react to this the same way I would ex...

Re: Greek Vocab Flashcards with Pictures
If you want to look at a resource to give you an idea how to put this list together see languagecourse.net and look up their vocabulary trainer. Their Greek course is Modern Greek but they include pronunciation and images for most if not all words. This might give you some idea how to illustrate the...

Re: Teaching my first class
Since you'll have a projector you can use with your laptop, I thought you might be able to make use of some pictures I have collected for the purpose of learning Hebrew. Many of the pictures are labeled in Hebrew but you'll find sorted according to subject, religion, agriculture, geography, military...

Re: Teaching my first class
If you only have twelve lessons I would suggest that your primary objective might be to make them want to learn more. Make sure you discuss passages that made you go "Wow, I didn't realize it meant that!" And emphasize discussion that will open their eye to the text. Sincerely, Michael Abe...

Re: Rom. 6:16 παριστάνετε ἑαυτοὺς δούλους εἰς ὑπακοήν
Sorry Stephen, You confused me. I'm used to seeing dative as a reference to case. Since the dative has multiple uses which can include that of indirect object. I thought you were applying it in that way. Of course the dative is used when indicating one person is obedient to another. But when I read ...

Re: Rom. 6:16 παριστάνετε ἑαυτοὺς δούλους εἰς ὑπακοήν
Stephen, Why did you decide both uses of ῷ were indirect objects? What if you take the first as a dative of reference and the second as a dative of possession? "Don't you know that to whatever (or whoever) you present yourselves as slaves in obedience, You are slaves to whatever (or whoever) yo...
