Re: 1Thess 3:13

Thank you Jonathon. I have read all the instances where παρουσία occurs in the Nt and as I noted in my post it seems to me that all of them except at 1 Thess 3:13 can be either durative or punctual, meaning either presence or arrival/coming. But at 1 Thess 3:13 the context restricts the meaning to a...

1Thess 3:13

Can you help me with a grammatical argument I’m trying to make? It may be that I’m all wet and my argument can’t stand. Our JW doctrine on the παρουσία asserts that the παρουσία is a durative period of time. In fact we feel that it began in 1914 and is still ongoing. There are some 25 instances of t...

Daniel 11:35

I’m interested in the meaning of καιρος εις ωρας at Daniel 11:35 in the OG. Especially how ωρας is being used. Some time ago I heard a lecture by GK Beale and he suggested (I hope I’m remembering correctly) that John when using the phrase “last hour” (1Jn 2:18) was referencing the book of Daniel in ...

Re: 1 Thessalonians 4:16

Thank you Jonathan. I've been discussing this with someone with a degree in linguistics and thorough knowledge of biblical languages who says that the Lord is to be understood as the agent of the three εν phrases. I wanted to run the question by others to see if anyone else agreed with my interlocut...

Re: 1 Thessalonians 4:16

Jonathan, Your answer doesn't really address my question. The Lord is the subject of the sentence nut is he also the agent of the three εν phrases. We seem to have two possible categories for the dative of the εν phrases; 1) instrumental 2) associative. If it's instrumental then it would seem that t...

1 Thessalonians 4:16

Is the agent of the three ἐν phrases ἐν κελεύσματι, ἐν φωνῇ ἀρχαγγέλου καὶ ἐν σάλπιγγι θεοῦ the Lord or is it impossible to determine?

1 Th. 4:16 ὅτι αὐτὸς ὁ κύριος ἐν κελεύσματι, ἐν φωνῇ ἀρχαγγέλου καὶ ἐν σάλπιγγι θεοῦ, καταβήσεται ἀπ᾿ οὐρανοῦ καὶ οἱ νεκροὶ ἐν Χριστῷ ἀναστήσονται πρῶτον,

Re: John 17:3 ινα + subjunctive = to an infinitive?

Thanks Stephen and Paul for your help. Paul, I need more time to work through your thoughts. Again thank you for your help! Stephen, if I'm understanding you correctly you are saying that John 17:3 is explaining the purpose of everlasting life, which is so that they will have the necessary time to l...
