1Cor. 9:23 and συγκοινωνὸς

1 Cor. 9:23 πάντα δὲ ποιῶ διὰ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον, ἵνα συγκοινωνὸς αὐτοῦ γένωμαι. It would seem that even though the verb συγκοινωνεω upon which the participle συγκοινωνος is derived can have the two different meanings (partaking or sharer in the sense of giving), the participle does not. It would seem th...

Re: Antecedant of LATREUO of Rev. 22:3

Stephen, though there is no valid rule that forbids either member from being an antecedent to a later pronoun, would you say that being joined as a grammatical unit contributes to the lack of saliency so that it would become difficult to reference one member of the unit without first bringing him i...

Re: Antecedant of LATREUO of Rev. 22:3

You write: "that τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἀρνίου functions as a grammatical unit and that as such neither of the substantives can be broken out of the unit so as to be considered the antecedent of αὐτῷ" So I ask, in light of Rev. 3:21 that tells us: ὁ νικῶν δώσω αὐτῷ καθίσαι μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ ἐν τῷ θρόνῳ μου ὡς κἀ...

Re: Antecedant of LATREUO of Rev. 22:3

Do you agree with my observation that τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἀρνίου functions as a grammatical unit and that as such neither of the substantives can be broken out of the unit so as to be considered the antecedent of αὐτῷ?Or how would you describe τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἀρνίου at Rev. 22:3? It is a certainly gr...

Re: Antecedant of LATREUO of Rev. 22:3

Revelation 7:15 says: "διὰ τοῦτὸ εἰσιν ἐνώπιον τοῦ θρόνου τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ λατρεύουσιν αὐτῷ..." Stephen C. does Barry's statement to the effect that the nearest noun in the sentence should be considered the antecedent unless there are overriding circumstances work at Rev. 7:15 so that θεοῦ should be co...

Re: Antecedant of LATREUO of Rev. 22:3

I related this pet peeve discussion to my new bride (married a year and half now) and she says as she went to different churches she was corrected away from the singular (Revelation) so many times that she just now calls it "The End of the Bible". According to my training there are 16 visions making...

Re: Antecedant of LATREUO of Rev. 22:3

That is determined by context. If this discussion were about the use of interlinears, for example, the unit "Barry and Stephen" would have a different significance. Sorry...what? No! ;-) It wouldn't change the fact that a plural pronoun would be needed. And one or the other referents (Barry or Step...

Re: Antecedant of LATREUO of Rev. 22:3

Hmmmm...? Perhaps it's more accurate to say that τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἀρνίου functions as a determiner limiting the possession of the throne rather than an adjectival phrase.

Re: Antecedant of LATREUO of Rev. 22:3

I concede that an oblique pronoun does not have to have its antecedent in the nominative case. With a little thinking I was able to construct a sentence that disproves my argument: Λαλῶμεν νῦν περί τῆς δικαιοσύνης τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τῆς ἁγιωσύνης αὐτοῦ. Regarding the grammatical unit "τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἀρν...
