BLC Greek Immersion Workshop "Jesus in Jerusalem 2012"

We finally have some pictures, description, and a few short videos up for people to see what went on at the BLC Greek Immersion Workshop "Jesus in Jerusalem 2012" Imagine if we could do this all year round? Yes, NT studies would change. But that is a different topic. http://www.biblicallan...

Re: Buth and diacritic marks/accents

A couple of clarifications might help the above. 1. The 9th century miniscule revolution in texts did not "maintain" the three accents, but ADDED them. They were not being pronounced in the 9th c. 2. At least one of the accents, perispwmenos tonos, originally required a long vowel since it...

Re: Buth and diacritic marks/accents

Well, that was a nice piece that Mark wrote and it would have been easy to follow for anyone who heard it read outloud in the first century. Of course, very few Greek literates managed to mangel Greek orthography quite so densely as Mark (see below), but that is part of humor. The Greeks had a long ...

Overview of various Greek Pronunciation systems

The heading to this sub-forum says: Is vocalizing the Greek words and sentences important? If so, how should Greek be pronounced (what arguments can be made for one pronunciation over another or others?) . . . Since nothing corresponds to that second question directly. I've added this thread. The di...

Use Real Language rather than process artificial language

Cross posted from the intro page: And yes, I happen to think it would be a good idea to supplement Buth with a more traditional text book (I like Machen.) But Buth himself may have a different idea. It all depends on what one wants to do. If one wants to learn to talk about Greek in English, then an...

so to be clear, always ask why the writer/speaker said whatever they said. We do that unconsciously, anyway.

Re: ὁ Ἰησοῦς· The article with proper names

David, Stephen already answered you with an excellent book. there is another set of ideas that need to be brought into the discussion as well, and that is Relevance Theory. Meaning/communication is negotiated between coder and decoder. They do not always have to make the best choices or the right gu...

Re: ὁ Ἰησοῦς· The article with proper names

Well, Mark, euphonics is also part of meaning/communication as one slides into rhetoric and poetic. Consider for example: "I TRY MY BEST, TO BE JUST LIKE ______________" Now we are set up to fill in the line with "the rest" we try our best to be just like the rest. But Dylan was ...

Re: ὁ Ἰησοῦς· The article with proper names

A couple of points: (Larsen) John 1:17 ὅτι ὁ νόμος διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐδόθη, ἡ χάρις καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐγένετο. This is not narrative, and there is a strong contrast between Moses and Jesus. Both are salient, while the law and truth are in contrastive focus. How do we know that 'strong contra...
