Re: Colors in Ancient Greek

I second Michael's suggestion, without having read the references. Color terms are notoriously language/culture specific and related to biology as far as we can tell. There are also universals, for example reddish will be the third color after white/light and black/dark, followed by a greenish categ...

Re: Roman Period Koine pronunciation of ευ in πεπαίδευνται

I'm not entirely sure why you find /εβntε/ to not be pronounceable. The voice bilabial fricative isn't obstructing the shift to the aveolar nasal. They're whole separate places of articulation. Say the fricative normally and then simply close off the air flow through your lips by putting your tongu...

Re: New Greek Teacher

Most of us do not have the time needed for total immersion, and we don't need it in order to be able to read and understand (at some level) the GNT Well, it depends on what one is dedicating their life to. If to biblical literature, and they are teaching Greek--then they should consider the level t...

Re: New Greek Teacher

how much value is added to New Testament interpretation by reviving Koine and turning it into an anachronistic living language usable only by the rare folk who care to learn it? I don't think my students would be interested in using Koine as a spoken language. Their motivation for taking my class h...

Yes. One expects the two cultures to dovetail, with appropriate wordings.

Re: Luke 22:38 Ἱκανόν ἐστιν

I've been thinking about this, and I'm not so sure. It's essentially an adverbial expression, and could still be taken either way. I'm not sure how "adverbial" helps since the verb is ἐστιν. Perhaps you mean it applies to something more abstract, such as the situation of being armed with the sword?...

Re: BLC Living Koine Greek - word count?

I am tempted to attempt a very basic CI based audio course based on the work that you (Randall Buth) have done. Just a head's up: It takes a lot of work to get the Greek idiomatic and correct. There are people trying to do this, some are reliable, others not. But it takes quite a bit of background ...

Re: BLC Living Koine Greek - word count?

Hello all! I've just embarked on my journey to learning Greek. I've had a few false starts trying to learn both Attic and Koine in the past. This time, I did a lot of research before starting. I have settled on Randall Buth's Living Koine Greek course. I purchased the entire set from here: https://...

Re: Confused about case endings for φῶς

Jesse, if it helps you, remember what little kids heard and what they learned and used: τὸ φῶς . . . καὶ τοῦ φωτός. They learned the forms and when it was the right time to use them. This follows the Universal Grammar Rule Number 1: "We do it like that, because that is the way they do it." [/b] PS: ...
