Re: Aspectual interpretation of ἐβουλήθη in Matt 1:19?
That's very helpful, Iver. I wonder if one can look at it a slightly different way as "to decide" is the ingressive of "to intend", in that if you begin to intend doing something, you have decided to do it.

Re: Aspectual interpretation of ἐβουλήθη in Matt 1:19?
The aorist has an easy explanation if LSJ is correct: "take counsel, deliberate, in past tenses, determine or resolve after deliberation"... "3. c. inf., take counsel, resolve to do". So, he had made up his mind. But would it differ at all from an imperfect if "in past tens...

Aspectual interpretation of ἐβουλήθη in Matt 1:19?
What is the interpretation of this aorist ἐβουλήθη in Matt 1:19? How would its meaning or function differ from an imperfect ἐβούλετο?Matt 1:19 wrote:Ἰωσὴφ δὲ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς, δίκαιος ὢν καὶ μὴ θέλων αὐτὴν δειγματίσαι, ἐβουλήθη λάθρᾳ ἀπολῦσαι αὐτήν.

Re: υδροβαϕη ενωσιν
OK I see from your edit, that it was metaphorical, meaning that the proposed union of theological views was "dipped in water," as opposed to "in bronze." So this is the force of the metaphor. Did you mention bronze (χαλκός) because of its pun with Chalcedon? There's a term from ...

Re: To or about?
Another indication that Ἠλίᾳ does not name a writing is that the word provides a personal subject for ὡς ἐντυγχάνει τῷ θεῷ κατὰ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ in Rom 11:2 and a personal antecedent for αὐτῷ in v.4 ἀλλὰ τί λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ χρηματισμός; I haven't looked in detail, but I suspect we'd find lots of instances in...

Re: υδροβαϕη ενωσιν
The relevant passage from Theophanes is: This seems to be based on a similiar...

Re: To or about?
To make ἐν Ἠλίᾳ fit the sense, however, Danker has to reformulate it by supplying the words "in the passage of". I find it interesting that, as late as Middle English, no such reformulation was felt necessary: it was still possible to write "the scripture seith in Elie" (the Wyc...

Re: Adjectival Use of Prepositional Phrases
1 Peter 4 [...] 2 εἰς τὸ μηκέτι ἀνθρώπων ἐπιθυμίαις ἀλλὰ θελήματι θεοῦ τὸν ἐπίλοιπον ἐν σαρκὶ βιῶσαι χρόνον. I didn't read it the way Jason read it. "ἐν σαρκὶ" can modify "χρόνον" adjectivally, and the noun phrase would be "τὸν ἐπίλοιπον ἐν σαρκὶ χρόνον" / "the re...

Re: Romans 9:5
As I was reading from my Greek NT, I came across the following clause in Romans 9:5 ὁ ὢν ἐπὶ πάντων θεὸς εὐλογητὸς εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας, ἀμήν. Exactly what is θεὸς syntactical function here? Is it appositive? Or is it functioning as the predicate? As Cranfield's commentary points out (cited in this thre...

Re: To or about?
Here I very much doubt whether ἐν τῇ Νεκυίᾳ could be read as "with regard to the Nekuia" (Orion, not the Nekuia, is the topic in the spotlight). LSJ gives one sense of νέκυια as "name for the eleventh Book of the Odyssey, D.S.4.39, Plu. 2.740e." I see this usage as comparable wh...
