Re: Text Comparison. - Same/Similar English Words - Two Greek Words - One a Noun - One a Verb

I have been meditating on a couple of similar passages in the NT. Rom 12:2  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal (ἀνακαινώσει) of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.  Eph 4:23  and to be renewed...

Re: βούλομαι followed by nominative participle?

There is a similar construction in Thucydides 1.20.2: βουλόμενοι δὲ πρὶν ξυλληφθῆναι δράσαντές τι καὶ κινδυνεῦσαι . Here, βουλόμενοι takes both δράσαντές and κινδυνεῦσαι. Hence: "wishing . . . to do something and to risk it" -- unless I am mistaken. Thucydides, History of the Pelopponesia...

I would love to know more about different topics that would be acceptable for publication. This is a great forum for all things Greek. I'm happy to see that you've posted a comment about the group. Please let us know your name so that we can change your user name on the forum -- and (if you use som...

Re: "γυναῖκας" in 1 Cor 7:29

My Attic reading group is working through Lucian’s The Ass , and we just had a relevant construction in our reading today (§16): ἐπεὶ γὰρ ἦν ἤδη νὺξ βαθεῖα καὶ σιωπὴ πολλὴ καὶ ὕπνος ὁ γλυκύς, ψοφεῖ μὲν ἔξωθεν ὁ τοῖχος ὡς διορυττόμενος, καὶ διωρύττετό γε, καὶ ὀπὴ ἤδη ἐγεγόνει ἄνθρωπον δέξασθαι δυναμ...

Re: The expression: "ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ἐντεῦθεν"

Four people were crucified with Jesus.... Four were crucified with Jesus, not two. Since neither this text ( John 19.18 ) nor any early text says ἐσταύρωσαν... μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἄλλους τέσσαρας , δύο ἐντεῦθεν καὶ δύο ἐντεῦθεν (“they crucified... four others with him, two here and two there”), I don’t thin...

Re: "γυναῖκας" in 1 Cor 7:29

I would never have thought that this meant multiple wives. οἱ ἔχοντες is plural, so γυναῖκας is plural. They didn’t all share a single wife (οἱ ἔχοντες γυναῖκα)! It simply means “married men.”

Re: Hello

Retired priest and teacher. I’ve taught Biblical Greek for over 40 years, and still don’t feel I know it well. Currently reading Plato in Greek, because why not. Welcome, Balaena. If you don't mind, please put your full name (and affiliation if relevant) in your signature. I'm currently reading Luc...

Re: Introduction

Hi everyone, I'm Oliver Weber. I recently received my Master's degree in Biblical Studies from New York State, and I plan to start my PhD program there as well. I haven't worked with Biblical Greek in a while, so I'm hoping to use this forum to brush up and improve my Hebrew . Basics of Biblical Gr...

Re: Active Voice

Thanks. I'm in the nouns right now in the latest course, though I have skipped ahead watching his videos from the previous version of "Greek for Everyone Else". So you will come to see that λύω means “I loose, release,” and λύουσιν means “they release.” The person and number are contained...

Re: Active Voice

My understanding of the active voice is that the subject is doing the action of the verb. I have been meditating on 2Co 7:1 "Therefore having these promises, beloved, we should cleanse ourselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." Here the f...
