Re: Teaching lookalikes for a passage
I've gotten bit a few times by accents that don't match the 'normalized form' (e.g. when τις gets accented because of sentence context), so it might be useful to mention a few of those examples as well. Not to to get too off-topic but I'm working on annotating MorphGNT with the reasons why the norm...

Re: The most frequent verb forms - not the first ones learne
Also a reminder why I added the normalisation field to MorphGNTJonathan Robie wrote:The SBLGNT syntax tree doesn't have normalized surface forms, so I think capitalization and enclitics messed up my counts. A reminder that the command line is useful for simple things ...

Re: A Morphological Lexicon of New Testament Greek
I'm not sure I would characterise my approach as less traditional. While I'm coming from a very modern viewpoint with regard to morphology, that viewpoint is in many respects a return to very traditional approaches that focus on paradigms rather than morphemes. People who are interested in the work ...

Re: Major's 50% and 80% lists
I should note that, even though I produced the lists, I also am: (a) not a fan of purely frequency-based approaches (b) a big believer in showing words in constructions rather than glossing them in isolation While I would love a full-blown pattern dictionary / construct-i-con, one less ambitious thi...

Re: The cost of learning a form
I should also clarify, I'm not suggesting students actually study themes and distinguishers (any more than they should study stems and endings and sandhi). I'm just suggesting we *model* learnability using such things.

Re: The most frequent verb forms - not the first ones learne
I presume that list is the entire GNT, although my numbers are different:
896 ἐστί(ν)
610 εἶπε(ν)
336 λέγει
314 ἦν
211 λέγω
201 ἐγένετο
178 λέγων
156 εἰσί(ν)
150 λέγοντες
138 εἰμί
That's using on MorphGNT.

314 ἦν
211 λέγω
201 ἐγένετο
178 λέγων
156 εἰσί(ν)
150 λέγοντες
138 εἰμί
That's using
Code: Select all
grep " V- " *.txt | awk '{print $6}' | sort | uniq -c | sort -r | head

Re: James Tauber is blogging daily until SBL
I've done quite a bit of playing with Major's 50% and 80% lists, attempting to reduce it to suit both NT Greek and communicative teaching. The latter requires some words that would be typically used in classroom work. I'm thrilled to see that Tauber analyzed the GNT this way. He offers a link to th...

Re: The most frequent verb forms - not the first ones learne
My thinking in http://jktauber.com/2015/11/13/initial-thoughts-cost-learning-form/ follows from the question: if you do start learning the most frequent *forms* first, at what point do you assume the reader can infer the rest of the forms for a lexeme? Thinking out loud: the student learns common fo...

Re: The most frequent verb forms - not the first ones learne
I made a similar point in my BibleTech 2015 talk http://jktauber.com/2015/05/06/my-bibletech-2015-talk/ . From about 17:37 thru 18:20 I specifically talked about why students could learn forms like ἔδωκεν long before knowing how δίδωμι conjugates in the present. I think students could learn all thos...

Re: The cost of learning a form
Well as I hope the post made clear, that's just the start. There's more to capture about the relationship between distinguishers and the post was just some initial thoughts.
