Re: Prompts for teaching verbs
Thanks, Stephen. Points well taken. Careful design of exercises so as to clearly target the skill to be mastered is a fundamental part of good lesson design!

Re: Lemmatizing Greek Verbs
I think future lexical resources should lemmatize based on the infinitive. As we move to more and more online resources we are at a time when the transition can be supported easily, and I am convinced that it will make learning the language easier. The kinds of exercises that Jonathan describes abov...

Re: Category for participles, infinitives, finite verbs
I haven't commented here yet, but I've certainly enjoyed reading your responses. Thanks to Jonathan for posting the question. In our discussions that led to this thread, I was not intending a rewrite of anyone's grammar or a change in anyone's approach to teaching about moods. We were working on pri...

Re: Apollonius Dyscolus on Temporal Adverbs and Tense
I'm not aware of any recent studies...If there is anything, I would doubt that it's on the Hellenistic & Roman Koine. Classical Greek would be more likely. Of course it would be. But one can only hope! :-) I would love to read any treatment of this topic in Classical Greek as well, but a treatm...

Re: Working Papers in Greek Language & Linguistics
The last post in this discussion was written quite a while ago, but I hope the topic is not dead. I am still interested in seeing the "Working Papers in Greek Language & Linguistics" become a reality. Did the contact with SIL ever happen? What should be our next step if you want to sal...

Re: Apollonius Dyscolus on Temporal Adverbs and Tense
This has been a fascinating discussion, and I would like to follow up by asking a question. Are any of you aware of related research on the function, placement, types, etc. of Hellenistic Greek adverbs? Do you know of research underway, or of articles or monographs that have been published?

Re: Linguists: What have you done for me lately?
I would like to address something Jonathan Robie wrote, assuming a difference in perspective between Mike Aubrey and myself. I failed to address his question at the time, as I should have done. I could make excuses, but they wouldn't help. :-) Jonathan wrote: Mike Aubrey tells me that Chomsky is jus...

Re: Linguists: What have you done for me lately?
Carl Conrad wrote: Again the question: what are the greatest deficiencies in the grammars of ancient Greek, especially Hellenistic Greek, that are regularly consulted today? I concur with Stephen that the grammars we continue to cite do not provide adequate discussion of word order, though I would c...

I would like to see the discussion continue. I have been unable to contribute so far because of other obligations, but I do want to read along and comment when I can.

Re: The terms, "Biblical Greek" and "NT Greek"
Carl has summed up the history very nicely. The University of Chicago Press requested that Robert Funk revise the BDF grammar, but he informed the press that too much research had been done since the last edition to allow for a simple update to the grammar, and that it was no longer reasonably possi...
