Re: Marilyn Phemister died in January, 2012

Thanks, Jonathan. I hadn't heard this either. Marilyn (not Mary) is one of my all-time heroes. She was a great help and encouragement to me when I was first trying to figure out how to make audio recordings on my computer, and the initiative she took very early on, to make the entire audio GNT avail...

Re: John 8:58 - Grammatical? πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγὼ εἰμί

"Could the ungrammatical feel of the sentence (I cannot tell if it is as ungrammatical in Greek as it is in English, thought it still looks weird to me) be intentional as a way to pull in a reference from Exodus 3 with the ἐγὼ εἰμί?" I say, emphatically, yes. Exodus 3 as well as Isaiah, as...

Re: οτι

whew! thanks, Stephen :-) "doing it about as well as can be" is plenty good enough for me at this point... One reason I decided to start with lesson 2 is that it seems to me that some students struggle with how to operationalize the idea of person and number, and the whole business of para...

Re: οτι

David suggests: τι ο μαρκος γραφει περι ιησου χριστου ο μαρκος γραφει περι ιησου χριστου οτι θελει παντας πιστευειν εις ιησουν χριστον That would be great much much later in the course, after Croy has introduced τις, τι prepositions and their objects (περι ιησου χριστου, εις ιησουν χριστον) πας, πασ...

Re: οτι

"So we're not really talking about "writing Greek," but rather, about composing sentences to illustrate a lexical item." Right. Yes. The lexical items and grammatical forms that have been introduced so far, at a very early stage of learning Greek. "For my part, I think it wo...

Re: οτι

Thanks Carl and everyone else who has replied here. I've satisfied myself that (a) if I write λεγω οτι ... or πιστευω οτι ... etc it's going to "default" to mean "I say that..." or "I believe that..." If I write such a sequence intending "I say because..." or ...

Re: οτι

Here's what I'm meaning to say. Bear in mind that all I have to work with is proper names in the nominative, the 9 verbs I mentioned in the present active indicative and present active infinitive, plus και, οτι and ου/ουκ/ουχ Λουκας διδασκει. Στεφανος ουκ ακουει και ου βλεπει οτι Λουκας διδασκει. κα...

Re: οτι

Thanks to all of you for your very helpful replies. I'm not too far into the Sim dissertation, but she does confirm my sense of disorientation about how to construe οτι e.g. in her section 7.3.3.1.2 example (18) from Epictetus, which "shows a clause which explicates a verb implying utterance, ε...

οτι

I've been studying Greek for quite some time, stubbornly refusing ever to write (let alone speak!) original Greek sentences that I made up myself. I've told myself and my students that "all the Greek sentences we're interested in have already been written -- and long ago." As is so often t...
