Re: Kmetko - medial function of the middle voice

This reminds me of verb aspectology. καλῶς ἐνόησας (or ἐνοήσω?) I often think of the middle voice like the kamehameha power-up or a movie shot where someone is in a bustling restaurant and the surrounding goes dark to isolate what he's about to do. I guess that's what medial means, putting the read...

Re: Morphology of ζαω

So what's this about? Vowels: Attic-Ionic shift of α to η Indo-European long *a asurvived in most Greek dialects, but in Attic-Ionic it evolved into a long flat e (English drag), which subsequently became assimilated to long open e (French tête), spelled η. In Ionic dialect this change of quality wa...

Re: Translating a Second Temple Aramaic text into Greek

ἀπό mostly (always?) sticks close to the ablative, so the first one. I used present participle forms of the verbs because the Aramaic verbs were participles That's a legit reason. Swathes of LXX or even some ultra literal English translations are like that too. "Good greek" (or internet co...

Re: Morphology of ζαω

There was a thread about this, echoed here . But this claims that the α in ζάω existed, was long, and resulted in the final contraction. This is corroborated by a little article (pg. 65) floating in Carl Conrad's (he commented in that thread but didn't mention this) site. If Mr. Conrad is reading th...

Re: Translating a Second Temple Aramaic text into Greek

Greek per se I think better to use straight verb (aorist or perfect) after πῶς ie. ἐξηράνθη ἀποπίπτω...ἀπό instead of πίπτω (aorist or perfect) εἰ μὴ not εἰ οὐκ not ζῆλος. ζωτικός perhaps, or ὑγρός... depending on the orig text and your interpretative leeway good Greek Hard to say what's good. Gramm...

Re: Parmenides IS succinct!

Parmenides diglot I haven't read non-koine widely, so be gentle on me. Here's how I understand that most famous part ἡ μὲν ὅπως ἔστιν τε καὶ ὡς οὐκ ἔστι μὴ εἶναι (one way—ὁδοί in the previous line—of thinking) is that something that exists is necessarily not non-being. (this line of thought was app...

Parmenides IS succinct!

Fellow liked infinitive. Reminds me of ancient chinese. Delightful.
