Re: Question concerning κατα

It is entirely probably that I am misreading or misunderstanding, but my questions are 1: is Luraghi right about this exhaustive vs non-exhaustive usage in Classical Greek 2: if she is correct, did this still apply in Koine? Whether or not Luraghi is right in her claim about the opposition of ἀνά a...

Re: 1 Pet 1:8 which verb does ἄρτι construe with?

Have you considered the alternative interpretation of άγαλλιᾶσθε as a futural present, which was apparently popular in the past although not in the modern translations? According to this ἄρτι can be construed with the whole of μὴ ὁρῶντες πιστεύοντες, and in contrast with the ex hypothesi future time...

Re: Cataphoric use of Personal Pronouns

> Partitives are used in very specific constructions, and none of those are used here. How specific? The first eg. in that Smyth snippet τῶν Θρᾳκῶν πελτασταί How is that different from γραμματεῖς αὐτῶν? Of course it depends on whether you see γραμματεῖς as a "part" in the first place, and...

Re: Lamech's number in the MT and the LXX (Gen 4:24)

This is not necessarily as simple as it may look from the perspective of a speaker of English. See previous discussion at https://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/b-greek/2010-January/051997.html and the three following messages in the thread, and then further remarks from Dr Pietersma at https://lists.i...

Re: κρύπτω w/acc of Who/What is hidden from

I am also curious about the "register" of Athanasius. His syntax is somewhat predicable. He uses hyperbaton to "package" complex constituents, a pattern that isn't used nearly that often in any NT author. Outside of biblical citations he seems to be free of Semitisms. I have no ...

Re: Infinitive Subjects of ἐγένετο

An interesting article by W. G. Most entitled 'Did St. Luke Imitate the Septuagint?' was published in Journal for the Study of the New Testament , Vol 15 1982 30-41, and is also available at https://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/most/getwork.cfm?worknum=221 Most claims the evidence shows t...

Re: κρύπτω w/acc of Who/What is hidden from

Interesting. I found a comment on the construction with ἀπό in Winer, 246 (small print near the bottom of the page), citing examples from LXX, also 284. https://archive.org/stream/atreatiseongram01goog#page/n259/mode/2up and https://archive.org/stream/atreatiseongram01goog#page/n297/mode/2up Also BD...

Re: John 8:25

Textus Receptua and Nestle Aland both use ὅ τι Now the interesting thing to me is that the τι has no accent and therefore is an indefinite pronoun. So, how is ὅ τι to be translated? An Exegetical Summary of John 1-8[1] says this: TEXT—Some manuscripts read ὅ τι ‘that-which something’, others read ὅ...

Re: 2 Corinthians 1:11 - Middle semantics?

Another, apparently simpler, possibility for the construction is suggested, for example in BDF §312.2 small print. In Shepherd of Hermas Similitudes 7.5 εὐχαριστεῖν is used in the active with an accusative object: καὶ τοῦτο εὐχαρίστει τῷ κυρίῳ [And give the Lord thanks for this], where τοῦτο refers ...

Re: Needing Help with Erasmus Exemplar

This manuscript is a 12th century codex of the four gospels, housed in the University Library in Basel and known as GA 2 in the standard numbering system. There is an online colour image of the page at http://ntvmr.uni-muenster.de/community/modules/papyri/?site=INTF&image=30002/undefined/2520/1...
