Re: Mk.14:4,5
In the Johanine account of the incident, Judas is explicitly mentioned as being the speaker, that what what Mark puts after the γὰρ is part of what he said. Λέγει οὖν εἷς ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ , Ἰούδας Σίμωνος Ἰσκαριώτης , ὁ μέλλων αὐτὸν παραδιδόναι, 5 Διὰ τί τοῦτο τὸ μύρον οὐκ ἐπράθη τριακοσίων δηνα...

Re: μοιχαλίς (ίδος) precedents or parallels for adjective
μοιχαλίς (LXX, NT, Hld.), et sens idolâtre (NT). ... la form plus anciennement attestée est μοιχεύτρια . [Dictionaire Étymologique de la Langue Grecque p725] That derivational morphological pattern is found in the NT too, (for μαθήτρια ). A side question: Am I right in asuming that μαθήτρια "d...

μοιχαλίς (ίδος) precedents or parallels for adjective
Are there precedent adjectives in -ίς , -ίδος after the fashion of μοιχαλίς in the classical period or epic genre to support its classification as an adjective in passages like, or parallels in the contemporary literature for -ίς , -ίδος nouns being used adjectivally: Γενεὰ πονηρὰ καὶ μοιχαλὶς σημεῖ...

GradCertTheolSt (Ancient languages) - ACU / OUA
If somebody is looking to consolidate their knowledge of Greek and Hebrew (or Latin) or prefers to begin with formal rather than self-study, then one option might be this: A Graduate Certificate of Theological Studies (Ancient languages) offered by the Australian Catholic University through the Open...

Re: Mk.14:4,5
Without γάρ, I would be more likely to read this as a quote rather than an explanatory clause, ... Even if it is the quote it is still explanatory - those of the disciples, who thought it was a waste were quoted as explaining why they thought it was a waste. The question could be rephrased as does ...

Mk.14:4,5
Ἦσαν δέ τινες ἀγανακτοῦντες πρὸς ἑαυτούς, καὶ λέγοντες, Εἰς τί ἡ ἀπώλεια αὕτη τοῦ μύρου γέγονεν; 5 Ἠδύνατο γὰρ τοῦτο πραθῆναι ἐπάνω τριακοσίων δηναρίων, καὶ δοθῆναι τοῖς πτωχοῖς. Καὶ ἐνεβριμῶντο αὐτῇ. Without considering the role of the γάρ, this encolorated phrase seems like something that would h...

Re: Short and long [i]
What an authour expects the alphabet to do, and what others expect that his use of the alphabet was doing may be at odds. To offer a context for reading with variant spelling in a manuscript, perhaps we as readers of a text without consistency of spelling, like say the Devonshire manuscript , (or an...

Re: Short and long [i]
Graphemically, by writing ΓΕΙΝⲰϹΚⲰ, it would have been less likely that late antique OCR algorithms might have returned a (specious) ΠΝⲰϹΚⲰ*.

Re: Short and long [i]
What do you say? Adjusting the spelling convention for γίνομαι / γείνομαι in Luke seems like an evolutionary (ie non-disruptive) innovation in the presentation of the text that will cause only minor inconvenience for readers, and regardless of whether the theory based on the evidence is any way tru...

Re: Modern Koine pronunciation resources
One resource I use is this series on the Psalms: Here is Psalm 1, 0Pkqu4cEF20 Psalm 50 and PwF3IMCbn3Y Psalm 118. -N-8QkSGsyY The text scrolling up is useful to understand words that I'm not familiar with aurally. I find it useful to play 3 or 4 texts (these or others) at the same time, to improve m...
