Learning Methods: Memorization of passages

I'm enjoying memorizing some NT passages in Greek using the Hoffman method of memorization. The method makes memorization much easier. The memorization itself has, I feel, given me a leap in my understanding of Greek. The nine passages I have memorized are short (one to three verses). I think a shor...

Re: Smyth "A Greek Grammar"

Thank you, that's a very helpful distinction. So, to consolidate things: Greek Grammar Smyth, Messing, 1956, 784 pages The standard for citation in academic work. According to the preface, this is virtually the same as the 1920 version. Printer's errors were corrected and some changes were made to t...

Smyth "A Greek Grammar"

Smyth "A Greek Grammar" is repeatedly recommended in B-Greek. " "Cross out the Title on it and write KOINE GREEK GRAMMAR " "It is the sine qua non grammar" " No grammar supercedes Smyth's " ...................................................................

Oops. That's wrong. The Unaspirated/Aspirated consonants are phonemic. The glottal stop is simply absent in Chichewa.

ὅταν Default for "WHEN...." in the future?

Funk says "860.4 A temporal clause with ὅταν (= ὅτε + ἄν) and the subjunctive corresponds to the protasis of a third class condition" "858. The assumption in a third class condition is left undetermined." But that doesn't tell me if ὅταν + Subjunctive is "marked" for a...

Re: Machen Erasmian: kinds of Erasmian and kinds of Restored

R. Buth, Thanks much for your reply. Somehow I missed it in August. 1. "oo" shouldn't be υ because ου is already "oo" [assuming you intended "oo" as 'boot' 'heavy shoe'] the solution is simply for students to hear alot of the sounds. the second solution is for the stude...

I've ordered it. They say it will arrive in early November. Give me a nudge if I haven't posted something by 2012.

Re: Machen Erasmian: kinds of Erasmian and kinds of Restored

My post above contains the full story of considering what pronunciation system to use for my African students. After working with the Living Koine books more, I am coming to the conclusion that Restored Koine would work with THREE MODIFICATIONS: 1. Omicron+iota would be pronounced OY (toy) 2. Alpha+...

Re: Machen Erasmian: kinds of Erasmian and kinds of Restored

It's good to now be able to distinguish between the names for different systems of pronunciation. We might add German tradition Erasmian, though I imagine few outside my chuch body speak it. I've recorded here my thoughts about the possibility of using Restored Koine Pronunciation in teaching my Afr...
