Re: Talking about the future in a past tense narrative text
Τοῦτο δὲ εἶπεν περὶ τοῦ πνεύματος οὗ ἔμελλον λαμβάνειν οἱ πιστεύοντες εἰς αὐτόν· οὔπω γὰρ ἦν πνεῦμα ἅγιον, ὅτι Ἰησοῦς οὐδέπω ἐδοξάσθη. Is this tense construction the "normal" way to talk about an event in Koine Greek, which is "future" from the point of view of the narrative tim...

Re: John 2:6: attributive or predicate participles?
There is nothing at all ambiguous about the sentence "I saw six girls singing in the park." No native English speaker hears this as in any way ambiguous. I saw six girls. What were they doing? Singing in the park. Where were you when you saw them? Duh, I was in the park... Now, I think th...

Re: Joh 17,2 some questions on the sentence
For what it's worth, Barrett in his commentary on John says that αὐτοῖς shows that πᾶν (even though neuter singular) refers to the disciples: by using the neuter singular John stresses the unity of the disciples ("the whole" rather than "all"). That strikes me as an over theolog...

Re: Revealing our uncritical assumptions as English speakers
I have difficulty here because my mother tongue expresses the two situations in sentences with completely different structures. Grammar is often a transformation between languages, rather than an impartial / independent analysis of a language. If your language (Korean?) doesn't make a differentiati...

Re: Joh 17,2 some questions on the sentence
Well, this is all highly annoying. I think my reading of the text makes better sense out of the syntax, but I'll have to look at this more closely. As I tell my students, if everyone disagrees with you on your understanding of the text, then it's probably you, not them...

Re: Joh 17,2 some questions on the sentence
καθὼς ἔδωκας αὐτῷ ἐξουσίαν πάσης σαρκός, ἵνα πᾶν ὃ δέδωκας αὐτῷ δώσῃ αὐτοῖς ζωὴν αἰώνιον. This passage just isn't that difficult, people. πᾶν ὃ is the direct object of δέδωκας. ζωὴν αἰώνιον is the direct object of δώσῃ, and stands in apposition to πᾶν ὃ as a particular item specifying part of the πᾶ...

Re: the meaning of the aorist imperative in Matt. 6: 10//Lk.
Jeremias may be right, but if so, it is based on context and other broader hermeneutical considerations and not the simple use of the aorist imperative. I'm with Stirling on this one. I have actually never read Fanning :o but I have been using this definition of the use of the aorist imperative sinc...

Re: Χειμων in John 10.22
Several times in his gospel John explains Jewish customs. This has led many interpreters to believe that he is writing to a primarily Gentile audience who would not necessarily know when the celebration took place.
