Re: Gal 1:11 γνωρίζω

Looking at the various translations I have on my Bible software (I love the fact that I can consult dozens of translations at once!), it looks like the desiderative rendering of γνωρίζω is a mainstream English translational tradition, but individual English translations and foreign translations gene...

Re: Focus in Luke 5:27-32

Here's how Levinsohn defines a "point of departure": The term POINT OF DEPARTURE designates an element that is placed at the beginning of a clause or sentence with a dual function: 1. It provides a starting point for the communication; and 2. It "cohesively anchors the subsequent clau...

Re: Gal 1:11 γνωρίζω

Thanks for your comments. I like the "crystal clear" idiom.

Could it be the case that the translators are assuming that the Galatians (should) already know that about Paul's gospel, so they want to avoid the implication that Paul is telling them new information?

Gal 1:11 γνωρίζω

Γνωρίζω γὰρ ὑμῖν, ἀδελφοί, τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τὸ εὐαγγελισθὲν ὑπ᾽ ἐμοῦ ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν κατὰ ἄνθρωπον· For I want you to know , brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; (NRSV) I want to discuss the interpretation of the first word, γνωρίζω. According to the le...

Re: Adjectival Use of Prepositional Phrases

(1) As I've mentioned before ( ad nauseam , I think), I personally believe that the Greek of Ephesians is weird. Yes, and it would also to help to have less ambiguous examples of the construction too. (2) With regard to Gal 2:16, what I find most disturbing is the possibility or likelihood that the...

Re: Adjectival Use of Prepositional Phrases

I don't know what the theological implications of this are (I'm not part of that discussion), but it would seem that ἐὰν μή in the case means "but rather," something similar to ἀλλά. Well, the theological implications are that the usual "except" meaning ἐὰν μή makes Gal 2:16 les...

Re: temporal deixis in Acts 8:18

Yes! That is exactly the distinction I am trying to identify! I am looking for some grammatical cue to take the interpretation one way or the other. There isn't one in this case. All the present tense of δίδοται means is that the state of affairs of the spirit being given held at the time of its ma...

Re: Adjectival Use of Prepositional Phrases

I recall that there was a recent article on Gal 2:16 probing this possibility for the construction in the first clause οὐ δικαιοῦται ἄνθρωπος ἐξ ἔργων νόμου ἐὰν μὴ κτλ. But that seems rather clearly adverbial. What was the argument? :geek: It's been a while and I don't have the article(s) at hand (...

Re: Adjectival Use of Prepositional Phrases

It's repeated again in Ephesians 6:12: ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἡμῖν ἡ πάλη πρὸς αἷμα καὶ σάρκα ἀλλὰ πρὸς τὰς ἀρχάς, πρὸς τὰς ἐξουσίας, πρὸς τοὺς κοσμοκράτορας τοῦ σκότους τούτου, πρὸς τὰ πνευματικὰ τῆς πονηρίας ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις . Regarding this, by the way, I would take τὰ πνευματικὰ τῆς πονηρίας as an ex...

Re: Adjectival Use of Prepositional Phrases

I thought we might start a thread on this, as you suggested. I'm glad you started a new thread. This is a topic I want to get a better handle on. What do you think of this passage? Ephesians 3:8-11 Ἐμοὶ τῷ ἐλαχιστοτέρῳ πάντων ἁγίων ἐδόθη ἡ χάρις αὕτη, τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εὐαγγελίσασθαι τὸ ἀνεξιχνίαστον πλ...
